Nocturnal Seizures???
I am almost 2yrs post-op, and about a month after WLS, I began noticing that sometimes I would wake up inthe morning being very disoriented and with a sore tongue(from biting). After the third or fourth episode, my husband told me one morning that he had woken in the night to see me seizing in the bed next to him.
I went to the doctor, and I had a series of tests(cat scan, EEG, blood work)that all came back normal. I've never had a seizure while I was awake, and this never happened before my surgurey. I take an anti-seizure medication at night, and it's reduced my seizures to once every couple of months.
My surgeon told me that under NO cir****tances was this a result of WLS, and he refused to run any tests and pretty much blew me off. My family doctor has been treating me, and he believes that it could be a result of low potassium. Has anyone else EVER heard of this?????
Hi Megan,
I have been thinking about your question for a while....
Has you MD checked you out for HYPO- Glycimia?
When my blood glucose levels go too low I can have a seziure and they happen most of the time at night... mailnly cause when I am asleep I can not feel the low BGL symptoms.
My MD did a CONSTANT Blood CLOCUSE MONITER for 4 days. It is a small beeper size moniter that attaches to you hip via a very thin needle./ cathater. ( does not hurt) and takes 288 blood glucose reading a day and night. You go to the MD;s office every day and they downlod the readings. Mine showed that almost every night I was going below a reading of 40 ( the lowest the moniter records) and NOT Waking up. On one of those nights My hubby said I was "having a bad night: as he calls it. Shaking and all sweaty, I did bite the inside of my ckeeks. There are many night he is on duty or away and I am alone so now I wear a alarm that goes off if my BGL gets below 60 and then I can get up and eat someting.
Now I make sure I have a carb snack before I go to bed. ( 1/2 english toasted with peanutbutter)
I hope you can find out why thisis happening to you.
Other than restricing the amouunt of food you are eating as well as limiting your carbs, I am not sure this is related to the WL surgery.
Thanks for your input! I will have to ask my doctor about this. I have noticed that in the past few months, my blood sugar has tended to shoot very low. I was a type two diabetic before my surgurey, but my sugar has been fairly stable since I've taken the weight off. I just find it odd that this was never an issue until after I had WLS. Thanks for responding!!!
I wonder if a carb snack is the right thing to prevent low blood sugar. It seems to me that the right thing is plenty of protein. Peanut butter is good, but english muffin not so sure. The hypoglycemia is usually due to reaction to simple carbs or to insulin. What does your doctor recommend for a bedtime snack???
