Hernia

I have a hernia, I am 5 months post op. It is located in the upper part of my abdomen just under my breasts. It sourt of sticks out at times. I was wondering if any of you have a hernia after the WLS and have you had it operated on and how much pain was there afterward? How soon did you have it operated on. Also after the hernia surgery can you still get another hernia? And last but least when you had you hernia surgery do we have to use those blood thinner shots again?

I developed a hernia in about the same spot on the left side about 4 months out. A few months after, I developed two more on the other side. They weren't causing any pain, so we decided to wait as long as possible to fix them so we could do a tummy tuck at the same time. I waited until I was 14 months out and had lost 125 lbs. I still had about 50 lbs. to lose, but I didn't think I could wait any longer. I had them repaired with mesh along with the tummy tuck in Feb. '05. The pain was about the same as it was with the WLS. I was in the hospital for 4 days and was ready to go back to work after 3 weeks, but I pushed it to 5 weeks. Yes you have to have the heprin shots everyday in the hospital and they put the compression things on your legs too. Blood clots really don't have anything to do with how much you weigh, but with being immobile. I don't know if you can still get another hernia after it's repaired. Hope that answers your questions. I have the very same thing I was wondering did your insurance pay for the tt when they repaired the hernia ? I have this hole in the center of my chest it is covered with a skin graft now but it really hurts now I see my doctor in October I am trying to wait it out thanks Deb

Insurance did not cover the tummy tuck, only the hernias. Joanne

Hi again!! Yes they did at the same time. The tummy tuck was $6,000. His usual price is $8,000, but he gave me a discount because I was referred by my WLS surgeon. I've never been this flat in my life. Not even when I was 16 years old. I'm very happy with the results. Joanne

hi there sorry it is taking so long to reply i had bariactic surgury july2003 and got a hernia ( my fault) a little over a year later and to me i hate to say this but the pain was worse than the orginal surgury but that could be cause i had the pain pump then i didn't with the second also the doc said i would never get another hernia in that spot because of the material used to patch it but it could happen in another spot hope this helps
