posting for my very sick sister, kim
Hi,
I have been reading your message boards in support of my sister Kim B who had RNY on june 15th, 2005. She did well for 2 months but not eating alot, and then developed a stricture. She had one EGD and was dilated open some. The nausea returned within 6 hours. 5 days later she had not been able to take anything, not even water. So I called her doctor yesterday and he direct admitted her to the hospital. Her potassium level was dangerously low and she was very dehydrated. Today, he is supposed to do another EGD to dilate her again. It is breaking my heart to see my sister so sick and sad. Anyone have any idea how long this will go on or suggestions for me to take up with her doctor? Thanks so much for your support. The information I have been reading has been so helpful. You guys are a wealth of information. I knew exactly what was wrong with her after the first EGD after reading your posts. thanks!!
Robin
Robin,
This journey is as individualistic as each person is. I have had 14 EGD's...11 strictures, 3 ulcers, 2 perforations, 1 revision, and now it looks as though I may have a kinked up bowel. I've also fought dehydration. Tell your sister to make sure she drinks as much as she can. When food starts sticking, switch to creamed soups. It's important to get as much nutrician as possible. If the strictures continue, she may want to ask her surgeon about having a steroid injected in the stoma during the EGD. They did this twice on me and it stopped the strictures.
The best advise I can give for your sister is for her to stay in constant contact with her surgeon's office. Communication is the key here.
It does get better...
