Question about no eating
Hi all,
I posted a few weeks ago asking for advice on what anyone thought my problem might be with my not being able to eat solid foods..the responses that I got were opinions of that I might have a stricture.... So I went in to see my doctor the other day and he has scheduled me to have a scope tomorrow but he told me that after being six months out and being able to eat some foods and drink my liquids with no problems that he doesn't think that there is anything "mechanically" wrong with me.... Is there anything else that could be wrong besides a stricture? Anytime I eat solid food it makes me throw up... This news sent me into a serious depression, I came home and cried for hours thinking what if there is nothing that he can find wrong with me does that mean that I am only ever going be able to survive on protien drinks and soft foods?
Any ideas would be more than appreciated.
Thank you all so much for your support.
Michelle
Michelle,
From the research I've done, vomiting after the initial healing period can be caused by several things.
The first is a stricture, which you are already looking into.
The second is eating too much at one time, not chewing enough, and/or drinking while eating, all of which can cause nausea/vomiting.
The third is food intollerances. Some people have trouble with foods like red meat or dairy (less stomach "chemicals" and time in pouch to digest lactose in dairy) after a bypass. Try seeing if a particular food is better or worse. Try adding only one new food at a time, if you can tollerate it for a few days then pick another food to introduce. This is not easy, and I bet you really miss food and chewing, but it will be better than vomiting I would guess. If you do not get relief soon then GET A SECOND OPINION from another doctor. You are worth it!

I have found that my intolerances have been with all kinds of meats..chicken, turkey, steak, I have even recently gotten sick the last couple of times that I have eaten tuna fish.... Believe me I weigh out any type of meat that I am going to put into my mouth to make sure that I am not eating to much..I wanted to rule that out.. and I do not drink while I am eating, that was never the case even before I had surgery... So I am really at a loss, I don't want anything to be wrong but I hope that he can give me a reason as to why this is happening to me.
Thanks
Hi! Are you "weighing" your food or measuring it? Our stomach holds volume not weight now. My nutritionist said to put things in a 1/2 cup (or smaller if needed). If it fits in the cup, then it should fit in our pouch. The ounces will not be the same as volume. I hope that this makes sense ... Katt1
Hi Michelle- First of all let me tell you... I'm only a few days ahead of you for surgery. I had a very difficult beginning. I had strictures consistantly from 5 days post op. I am in a 1% category. I had 14 EGD's done. My last one I went 7 weeks inbetween and the only reason I did it was because I "thought" I was starting to stricture again. I had been cancelling the EGD's until this point because I simply had enough. Well my last one was 3 weeks ago and I was told everything looked great. NO strictures, no ulcers just a tiny pouch. I have a very difficult time eating and can't seem to find anything I tolerate that's healthy. I've come to the conclusion this is my life for what it is. My pouch is a micropouch so anything with any sort of texture gives my so much pain and I "spit" up. I can tolerate beef jerkey, peanuts and everything that's bad for you including cookies cake etc.... Hamburger meat is the worst!!!It has me in pain for an hour. SO, perhaps your like me and you may have a tiny pouch that does not like texture foods. It's a pain and I feel like I eat more unhealthy now than ever in my life. Good Luck and hope things get batter for you. Tammy
Hi Tammy-I saw your reply and wanted to tell you about my Dr visit today. I took the email you sent me and he read it- could not believe you and I are so much alike. He is going to dilate me to 15 next Monday- also he is thinking maybe I have nerve damage and I am having a mobility problem with food. Has anyone ever suggested that to you? They are going to perform a molbility test on my esophogus next week. I never had the barium swallow. He said this mobility study should show what is going on.I see you are still having problems. I tried all your suggestions. Even with cream cheese could not keep any meat down. I tried lump crab - no luck. The really weird thing is on July 24 (I cannot forget date) I ate like nothing was wrong. I had Wendy's chili- a baby hamburger and later in evening a small amount of salad. without throwing up. I was in heaven. I thought a miracle occured. Well, Tuesday I was back to square one. Dr. Lacy was just in total amazement. I like you are totally disgusted. It has been three months since my last dialation. I have lost 22 lbs so at least my weight loss has slowed but I eat nothing healthy like you. I so agree. This is the most unhealthy eating in my life. thanks for all your help.
