Hi everyone...I'm almost 6 weeks post-op from a laproscopic RNY. I've been severely nauseated and exhausted almost every day. I was told that 10% of all women who had this operation had this complication and that it usually resolves itself in 4-6 weeks post-op. I'm really rather skeptical that mine will go away anytime soon. Are there others out there that have had the same trouble and how long did it take to go away? Thanks!

Dear Polly, I wish I could give you a positive answer on when your nausea will fade away, but unfortunately, I am one of the 10% that have never experienced a nausea-free day since the date of my original surgery (Sept. 2002). I actually underwent an emergency revision surgery in Jan. 2003 which saved my life, but was unable to correct the nausea and my inability to eat solid foods. (please read my profile if you have a chance...it is lengthy, but may have some good information in it that may help you). Like you, my problems coincided with 6 weeks from my open RNY surgery date. What are you eating? What has your doctor recommended as treatment? I can give you so good advice on way that I have dealt with and am still dealing with the nausea. Have you been vomitting as a result of the nausea? If you have, the most important thing a doctor (specialist) said to me was this..."do not vomit". I was vomitting several times a day and it was miserable. Basically, do whatever you can to keep the nausea at bay and not vomit. Are you on any anti-nausea medication? Get some from your doctor (the over the counter stuff will wor****il you can get a prescription for something better)---my original surgeon should have place me on an all liquid diet immediately after I complained of nausea and vomitting, but he didn't. He had me on the anti-nausea meds, but still encouraged me to try different solids. He also took out my feeding tube too soon. He should have waited until after I tried solids to remove it---to make sure I could tolerate solid foods. Had he waited to remove it, I still could have gotten liquid protein in my body, and I wouldn't have vomitted up all the meds. Also, is your surgeon pushing solids on you? Back off to soft solids or mushy solids if you are being encouraged to eat solids at all. Jello, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, saltine crackers, and liquid protein shakes were all food items that I was able to keep down most regularly. I also was able to tolerate peanut butter/cheese crackers---I don't know why, but I lived off of them for a couple of months in early 2003. Liquid protein will be your best bet if you are still nauseous after trying soft solids, but I always had a problem with sugar, so I had to keep the protein shakes almost sugar free. I am not a doctor, but I am a survivor of complications from gastric by-pass surgery. I have felt alone in my struggle, but since posting my journal on this website on a regular basis and reading the complications boards on a daily basis I have found others with the same problems as myself. Complete strangers exchange emails with me and it feels so good to know I am not alone. The support I have received from this website has been an invaluable tool to my on-going recovery. I will keep you in my prayers and hope that others will do the same. I wish more people would respond to the complications boards---the more information the better. Take Care, Monica

I'm 4 days post op and I threw up the first two days. My doc sent me home with Pepcid capsules for nausea... it really so far seems to cut it.

I am sorry to say I have nausea every day. I have what is called gastroparesis which is the lack of movement by the intestines. This is due to a combination of vegal nerve injury(which was cut during my RNY) and a ruptured ovarian cyst (from PCOS). So mine is not entirely the surgery but is related. I am in constant nausea and pain. I cannot eat enough to sustain strength so I have a feeding tube. I take two medications for nausea, four different meds for pain and a couple other meds. I am sorry I do not have better news for you. You are free to read my profile where I have much of my story there.I hope you feel better soon, Alannah

Sorry to say - but I am another one who has had constant nausea since surgery....Some days are without it - but they are few and far between... And it sucks. People tell me I should be happy to be at goal weight - but you know - when I was fat - i was very healthy and NEVER sick. So hard to just accept it. Hopefully - your nausea will pass...Give it another couple of months. Anne 263/150/145 (below goal weight)

Polly, I am 13 months out and I still have nausea every day. I was told the same thing that 10% of us will have it long-term. I take 60 mg. of Prilosec a day. I also have to take MOM for regular bowel movements. All X-rays and upper and lower GI's revealed no blockages or strictures. It sucks. I have used marijuana medicinally for my nausea and it really helps but it's hard to find plus it's illegal. But it definitely worked for my nausea. Good luck!
