Hi everyone.. just a quick question. I'm 6 days postop from open RNY - and today I woke up with these horrible pains that start in my midsection and move down the center of me to my lower abdomen. This is also accompanied by diarherra (about once every ten minutes I have to run to the bathroom) and some slight nausea. I'm still on my liquid diet, however yesterday I did try some pureed food to see how I would handle them (this was over 24hours ago). It's now more than halfway thru the day and I'm still experiencing these horrid pains that come and go, about once every ten mintues. Walking does not seem to help - as I had originally thought that it was gas, b/c it does kind of feel like a gas pain. I've taken some GasEx and I've been drinking water all day. Am I just reaping the inconveniences of the food I ate yesterday? Any suggestions?? Tiffany

Hi Tiffany, I had the same issues in my early months post op. i was fine, and then all of a sudden i had these horrible gas cramps in my stomach. and they came in waves.. My doctor didn't see it being something serious at the time, so this is what i was told to do, and it worked. Just to simply .. drink some ho****er.. (hot tea is fine but decaf) well sip it and keep moving.. walk in place, pace just move so the gas (if thats what it is) can come on out. the ho****er will sooth your stomach and break up the gas bubbles. if that doesn't work and gasex doesn't then you may have to see your doctor. it doesn't fix it immediately but you should see some relief within 30 minutes. or sooner. I am 11months post op.. and i still have bouts of bad gas and trapped gas. and i still haven't been able to identify what causes it. Gas Ex doesn't seem to help me anymore.. so i just keep sipping ho****er, or tea. Good luck and congrat's. You will be on your way. JUST REMEMBER.. the pain is a trade off--we have to take the good with the bad. I will keep you in my prayers.. (smooches)

Have you been tested for c.diff? When I had it (got it right after surgery), I was going to the bathroom 30-40x a day, sometimes a lot, sometimes little to night. I got horrible cramps with the c.diff. too. It's not a surgical complication per-se, its a risk from taking antibiotics period. A simple stool sample will answer the question - call your doctor and ask for the test (and obviously let him/herknow what your symptoms are). My surgeon had me go right to the hospital for iv fluids and admitted me until I was stable. Even if it's after hours, call. Good luck! Megan ps: I'm c.diff. free now, and doing just great!
