I am still in the research phase of my journey into WLS. I am trying to get all the information I can about the possible complications I can have. I know that I can get obstructions, strictures, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, malnutrition, dehydration, incision infection, pulmonary embolism and hair loss. Have I covered them all??? (boy it looks like a lot when they are written down!) Is there anything I am missing that I need to talk to the surgeon about? Cathy

Hello Cathy, No I think you covered most of them. Make sure you know and are clear on what vitamins you are going to need to take. You can also get a blood clot in general not necessarily a pulmonary embolism. I think you have the right idea though. Christie 9 weeks post op

Don't forget death, that to me is the ultimate complication, and they can't fix it. But if we know the Lord we will end up in a much beter place.

You didn't specify what surgery you are looking into. I had lap band surgery and the complications are very different that with bypass or DS. They can range from a slipped band, rare, but happens. This is usually fixable with or without surgery...rarely it has to be removed.. Erosion - when the band actually erodes INTO your stomach. More rare than slippage. The common thought is that this happens when the band is too tight for too long. The band is usually removed in this case until you heal. Some people can be rebanded at this point, but usually not. Most complications are fixable and not life threatening. I just thought I would tell you because you did not specify your surgery. -Paula- 233/153/130

there are also the risk of bowel obstruction/rupture or leaking from the sutra's. But if you are in very well trained hands you'll be ok
