Muscle atrophy?

I'm 5 months post-op and I admit i'm not getting the protein I need, although I desperately try. Lately my left leg has been acting really strange. It's like I have no muscle in it, and the muscle I do have is not working very well. I have to wear slip on shoes because I can't even get my foot into a shoe because I can barely feel it. When I walk I can barely lift my foot so it's dragging a little. Has anyone heard of this? =/ I should prolly go to the docs huh?

Hello Karen, reading your post it made me feel like I was reading about myself. We have both been through the same things. I had surgery March 1st 2004 I did fine for 3 weeks. Started having problems eating and drinking liquids, I ended up in the hospital for dehydration and malnutrtion and an ulcer. 3 weeks later had to have my gallbladder removed, was doing fine after this but 5 days later I was unable to walk or stand without help. The numbness, burning, and pain was so bad. I ended up in a wheelchair for weeks, then using a walker. I changed PCP and found a doctor *****ally listen I was finally Dx with periphral Neuropathy in August of 2004. I take B12 shots every 2 weeks this has helped, I am now able to walk on my own, but still have pain, burning and numbness, it is worst at night. I have lost 127 pounds, but I have not been able to really enjoy it. I had surgery done I knew what the possible risk were, but having a Neuropathy was not ever mentioned. I went through so much, far more than what I wrote. Thank you for telling your story, I am sorry for what you are going through, but I feel better sharing my story with someone who has been there. God Bless You, Rhonda

Found this using a search engine: Google.Com..type in "what is Peripheral Neurpopathy?" Maybe this will help some of you understand WHY you have this problem. ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Mayo Clinic researchers have found a significant number of patients who undergo "stomach stapling" or gastric bypass surgery for weight reduction develop peripheral neuropathy, damage to any of the body's nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. The development of nerve damage is associated with malnutrition, and so the researchers contend may be largely preventable with proper nutritional care.

Shannon, thank you for that information. I too have also read that information from the Mayo clinic as well as from other sources. I dont think that understanding why, is the problem that any of us are having. Its the fact in my case at least that if I had not gotten an ulcer and gallbladder problems that kept me from being able to eat or drink that its a good chance that I would not have ended up with this problem. Plus the fact that I went un diagnoised for several weeks that I did not get the treatment that was needed. The sooner Dx is made concerning this problem the better off person will be. A lot of doctors dont mention to there patients that this is a possible side effect, at least mine did not. It would have not stopped me from having the surgery, but at least I would have known that this is something that could possible happen. Rhonda

Dr.'s that are educated in all aspects of any weight loss surgery should know that your gall bladder must be removed at the time of surgery to avoid future problems. Alot of Dr.'s are also in this surgery for the $$. They don't want to inform their patients of possible complications, afraid they'll lose them & won't get their $$. Keeping your gall bladder after surgery only puts more $$ into their pockets, as a later surgery is inevitable. So, it's up to us as "the patient" to thoroughly research & educate ourselves of any type of WLS, surgeon & aftercare. Including all possible complications. I am sorry for your condition & sorry Dr. didn't inform you of every possible complication! Is there a cure or treatment to stop the atrophy? Best Of luck !! Shannon

Dania I hope you are doing better today. I'm glad I read this post cause the other day I was feeling a numbess in my leg during bicyle exercises. It happened twice. Reading the posts here reminds me to take my B150 the doc recommends. Thanks for bringing it up!

My leg has gotten much better actually, the diagnosis? I pinched nerve in my neck. However, i'm watching my body for symptoms now for ANYTHING out of the ordinary, it scares the heck out of me what *could* happen after this surgery that I wasn't aware of before. Thank you guys for all your responses =)
