Hi Kim! I had RNY on 12/7/04 and did well for three weeks. Then I began getting extreme chest pain upon eating some soft foods and all of my meds. I then began throwing up the meds. I called one of the surgeons on New Year's Eve and they said I must have inflamed my esophagus. I was told to back off on solid foods for a few days. Things were getting worse by Monday so I called office back and spoke to another surgeon. He set up an endoscopy for Wed. 1/5/05 to check for a stricture. He Didn't think it was really a stricture as I wasn't throwing up all foods, but wanted to make sure. That night it progressed to so I couldn't keep any food or meds in. I had the endoscopy on Wed. and the doctor did have to use the balloon to dialate. My paperwork says he did it to 10 mm and then 12 mm. Doc said they don't usually see this until at least 3 mons. out.... It happened to me in 3 weeks!
They also explained it may take a couple times before it "Holds"? The test was no problem at all.... however, I have been sick to my stomach and not able to get in solid foods or meds. Surgeon told me to go back to full liquids for a few days. I felt better yesterday so I attempted scrambled egg and my meds this morning. I've been sick to my stomach all day, but not throwing up. I'm also constipated and can't seem to keep liquids in to hydrate.
They've got me taking stool softners each day. I tried some cottage cheese for dinner and it put me into pain in my lower back and left side. I felt like i needed to have a bowel movement, but can't. I called surgeon back and he said stay up and drink water to get hydrated! He told me to go to store in the morning and get Senocot S to try and get the bowels moving. He keeps telling me "we'll work through this, don't worry.... but I'm the one that has felt sick and hasn't had much soft foods in past week!
He told me if pain gets worse tonight call him back and go to ER. I'm fortunate that my surgeons work at a hospital only about 40 minutes away.
So hopefully, your dilatation worked for you on Friday and you are feeling better. I can't imagine be sick like this for 15 monthes... my body is tired from feeling ill for the past week and a half! Hang in there and GOOD LUCK!
Kim
I just had the gastroscope down this past Saturday morning and I had a stricture that was almost closing the hole up. They dialated it and I sent home that afternoon. I was put to sleep with Versed and Demerol. It was not a big deal at all. I am 4 weeks out and I started noticing it on the 3rd week.
Goodluck
