Anyone develop a throat ulcer?
I am 3 weeks post-op. It's been a rough road for me. Six days after surgery, something seemed to be "stuck" in my throat. I had went to the doctor 1 week after surgery and did an Upper GI. Everything was going down alright and there were no leaks in the pouch. Then 10 days post-op, I called my surgeon because I had no energy and that thing in my throat was starting to hurt. He put me into the hospital and put me on IV's because I was severely dehydrated. Then the next day, they did an endoscope to find out what's going on. They found out that I have an ulcer in my throat that is taking up about 60% of my throat. WOW. That's big! Anyways, the doctor put me on Carafate and Protonix. I have been on it for almost 2 weeks and I don't feel even the slightest bit better. For the past 2 nites, it has been very hard to sleep because I seem to be choking over this thing. I was just wondering if there was anyone else out there that has had a problem with a throat ulcer. If so, how did they treat it? How long was it there? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Brenda....I was having a hard time swallowing also and went in to the hospital they found that I had a stricture and an ulcer. They haven't fixed it yet but hopefully on the 26th when I go in they will be able to, they kept me on a liquid diet and I am sick of it already next week will be my 5th week on liquids and I am getting grouchy because I need to eat something.
They have me on protonix.

I am currently 4 weeks post op and have been in the hospital 2 additional times since my surgery. They finally told me I developed a ulcer and have me on protonix and some liquid. What are they doing for you on the 26th. I cannot stand the feeling everytime I try to eat something. They told me if I could not tolerate food or liquids they were going to put a pic line in me and give me fluids at home. HELP... I am at the point I wish I did not have the surgery,,, but too late now.
Brenda,
I had an ulcer in my throat that was caused from irritaiton from the tubes during the surgery. It took a little while to go away and was very sore but did get better. The other thing I would check with doc with
would be thrush (yeast infection). It can be very painful and will need treatment. We are more likely to get yeast post op.
Hope you get better soon.
