Does Anyone Know What This Is?

Hi everyone. This is my first posting and I have a question. I am 2 weeks post-op R-N-Y. I did well in the hospital and have continued to do well, except for what may or may not be a "dumping" type of syndrome. I tried tuna fish, and had a sensation of pressure in my chest, all the way up my esophagus, accompanied by crampy-type pain between my shoulder blades. There is usually a lot of burping, sometimes hiccups, and perspiration. It usually goes away in 20-25 minutes, and I'm fine. There is no nausea, no diarrhea, and no abdominal pain, and it varies in severity. In everything I have read, I see nothing that includes these symptoms. I've had it twice after trying tuna fish (once with light mayo, once without), although I had had it a day or so earlier without any problems. I had it once after salmon (done in the microwave) and canned asparagus. And today after scrambled egg beaters and fat-free cheese, which I've been eating for a week. If it makes any difference, back in the "old" days, whenever I ate ice cream to fast, I would get the same pain between my shoulder blades, not an "ice cream headache".

I have similar symptoms when I take to big of a bite or eat to fast, your food may be getting stuck in the opening and it takes a while to pass.

Thanks for your reply. Typically I take small bites, chew 20 times, then watch the cloc****il 3 minutes have passed before I take another bite. I'm probably not eating too fast.

Sounds like you're getting too much in or it's getting stuck in there...perhaps take smaller bites and chew chew chewr? My surgeon requires 4 weeks of liquid diet post op to allow the pouch to heal. Perhaps doing liquids for a little while might allow the pouch to rest and then maybe the solids won't be so painful to eat? I hope you feel better!!!

I think the pain you're getting is pretty common. It seems to be from eating too fast or eating large pieces of things. Try to slow it down & take smaller bites & see if it doesn't get better.

My dumping syndrome includes, sweats, chest pain, heart racing, diarreah, etc. and lasts for 15-25 minutes. So that may very well be dumping for you. Sometimes I dump on things that shouldn't make me dump. Such as tuna fish, and some other meats.
