coffee grounds

Can someone please tell me what the coffee ground vomit is from? I've asked my surgeon--she says she does not know. Thanks

Hi Berthenia, Coffee ground vomit usually means old blood. How are you doing today? If this is still happening, you should tell your doctor or go see another doctor. If you are vomiting alot, you should go to the ER ASAP. Maybe, if it was just one time, it was some leftover blood from trauma due to the various tubes they use during surgery. I am a surgical nurse honey and it's called coffee ground emesis. It is blood usually that has come from the stomach. This happens when the hydrochloric acid digests it. You need to question your doc if he/she didn't seem concerned after hearing this.
