hi i havent posted here i am jill i had RNY on July 20th 2009, i started at 268. i had my son almost 3 years ago while i was on the pill so in December 2009, 5 months and 50 lbs down after my WLS i had an IUD put in. since then its been nothing but complications and i have been sticking to the program however i have only lost 30lbs in the 10 months since then. i have brought up to my dr numerous times the side effects and one of them being lack of weight loss and she swears up and down the Mirena has had nothing to do with that. after many other more severe complications i have decided to get the IUD taken out. i have that sceduled for November 4th. my question is, have any of you, or anyone you know, had any complications with not losing weight after WLS due to Mirena? i am hoping this hasent hindered my WLS or caused it to fail completely!
i went through hell to get my RNY and have been following it and not losing and its been very discouraging.
thanks in advance for the help

Jill, I have not used Mirena before, but Mirena does have a hormone component to it.  I use Nuvaring, and because of the low dose of hormones it releases, my weight loss has slowed to a crawl.  I will stop using it this week, and I am having Paragard put in.  I do believe that any hormonal birth control will sabotage the surgery...just my opinion..

Just my advice? But have the Mirena removed. IT can/does/will cause weight gain or lack of loss. I had one put in after my second child, she was conceived on BCP and I didn't want that happening again so, was convinced by my gyn that Mirena was an excellent option. Was put on a 1200cal diet (was then planning RNY, and this was my pre-op diet that I followed pretty well) and not only did I gain 12lbs over the course of a year but also got a "pooch" in the front...like a baby belly  :(  Well, this brought on the research that I SHOULD have done before getting the Mirena...even though my Dr. said the massive mood swings, weight gain, and "pooch" were definitely not side effects of the Mirena. Sure enough, I located a blog type thing about Mirena...over 100 different women on several continents had the exact same side effects...I had it removed. Instant better mood...instantly lost the 12lbs and on the SAME diet STILL losing now that my stupid Mirena was removed. SO, due to my experience and the experience of the women I read about that is always my advice for people with/considering Mirena. It's NOT worth it...if you can avoid it, please do!

Weight gain is a documented and published side effect of Mirena.  It doesn't happen to most but to the people it DOES happen to, it can mean 10+lbs.  Have it taken out and see what happens.  They have Paragard which has no hormones but only use it if your periods are otherwise ok.  I had one, it works.  BUT if you have trouble with your periods, it may make you bleed more.
