reverse gastric bypass
My daughter has been suffering for 18 months and my need reversal.
She has also had the emergency surgery for twisted intestines twice.
Now she cannot eat anything without dumping within 15 minutes. The
test to check how fast good goes thru, usually 1-3 hours, took 11 minutes
for it to go thru. She is now down to 95 pounds and still cannot keep food in.
I think any more weight loss and we will lose her. 3 sets of doctors cannot
figure out what to do. Please can you provide me with your doctors information.
If you need my email address for a private message I will provide you with it.
I want my daughter to survive and at this rate, things are looking pretty grim.
We want the very best surgeon available out there to help her. We are willing
to do anything to help her at this point. She is still in her 30's with 2 children and
can hardly stand up. Her legs keep swelling and are painful and all tests show
nothing causing the swelling.
Please help. We will be forever grateful.
Thank you.
I had the RNY Gastric Bypass in 2000 in Ohio. At first I did really good got down to 225 from over 400 lbs. All the sudden I had more attention from men then I knew how to handle, it really freaked me out and I deliberately stopped the weight loss. Ive gone back up to over 300 as a result.
My problem is that I am in very bad shape from lack of absorbtion. My doctor told me I was basically getting about 25-50% of the nutrients from food. To my surprise and dismay I find that I have a rare allergy to b12 in any manufactored form. Even blood specialist have made the comment about never having actually met anyone with it, its very discouraging.
Right now my b12 count is so low the doctors are panicking a bit trying to find alternatives to getting it up, and im starving all the time and meat seems to be the only thing that satisfies for a bit. I recently switched doctors and now my new doctor is talking about looking into reversing the RnY operation and from what Im reading that isnt even an option after so long. Im tired of fighting this and donating blood to the vampires and struggling to find more information for the doctors that are clueless how to help me. I have no energy, im constantly fatigued, i forget things, my work is furious at the amount of time im missing because sometimes I just cant seem to crawl out of bed, I catch anything that comes through because my immune system is connected to the b12 levels.
I guess I need to hear that there is someone else out there that is going through this and leading a normal life. And not sure what to tell my dr when he suggests the reversal again.
Hi everyone--
To make a long story short, I had a Mini Gastric Bypass done in March of 2001, I lost 99 lbs and started to gain weight. I spoke with my surgeon and he performed a revision which from the original bypass at 6 ft to another 6 ft to make a total of 12 ft.
Well then I went into hell. I spent a great deal of time in the hospital on and off. I was given extra potassium on several different times, protein, TPN, picc lines, Triple central line catheters. Had perforated bowel, seizures, metabolic acidosis, and the list goes on. Everything under the sun made me barf. Couldn't keep anything down. Blood pressure went in the toilet. Spent a few times in ICU, telemetry unit. and such. I was a sick cookie.
Lost a great deal of hair, loss of memory, leaking stool, etc. So it came to pass that I had to get a reversal. I looked like a Holocaust Survivor. From the first surgery on the table I weighed; 359 and when I got on the table for the reversal, I weighed 129 and with heart problems starting.
About 5 or so days I ended up back in the hospital with dehydration, pain, nausea. They kept me for a few days. Sent me home with pain meds. well since then 8 yrs ago, I have chronic pain and nausea and vomiting. I basically live on pain pills and Zofran.
Most other surgeons have told me that I really should get another bypass which I agree with. Oh and of course i've gained most of my weight back. Which of course screws everything else up. I'm tired.
Now before any of you jump on my case I followed the "rules" to the best of my ability. I vomited up the protein mixes and continued to vomit on a great deal of stuff. However Gatorade was the only thing I could tolerate. I have been a mess.
I quit jobs, lost jobs, lost friends, etc. I have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, Depression, and Gen. Anxiety.. Most days I would rather stay in bed under the covers. I don't exercise because I'M IN A GREAT DEAL OF PAIN. I have lower back arthritis, and my artificial hip.
I want to be off of disability and go back to nursing, but until I can work (if ever) I'm taking this time to go to school to get my BSN/MSN and I could work in nursing education.
I need help in finding a surgeon that will take medicare starting in May. Soo...
If anyone can help or lead me to the right path it would be truly appreciated.
I've just passed my five year mark. I've gone from 333 to 113. My current bmi is 16.2. I have not kept down solid food or had a day without vomiting in over four years. About three months after my rny, I started getting sick. My surgeon scoped me and discovered I had a gastrojujenal stricture. In the past few years I have had 9 EGD procedures to scope, stretch or cauterize this structure to no avail. I have now been lead to believe this is just all my fault. I'm at the end of my rope... I'm sick, tired, depressed, lost my job, lost my most important relationship, oat friends, become an alcoholic... I've been diagnosed with hypoestrogenism as my body has no fat to store hormones anymore and am going through premature menopause and can no longer consider ever having kids at the age of 36. I've attempted suicide twice in the past two years. Finally I've gotten my FNP to listen to me that SOMETHING IS WRONG. she has offered to be my advocate as I search for a surgeon or GI or ANYONE that can help me... Has anyone in the Raleigh/Durham area gone through a reversal or revision? I will not go back to my original surgeon at UNC, as I'm sick of being treated like it's my fault. Before I started cold calling random doctors, I thought I'd check with you guys first. I cannot live in this hell any longer, I'd rather be fat.
Thanks.
I found this topic while doing research for my bypass reversal. It is currently scheduled for January 24th, 2014. I had the r n y just over 2 years ago. December of 2011. I was doing great until December of 2012 when my belly started hurting. I went to Langley AFB hospital as I worked there at the time. X-rays, MRIs, and a CT scan showed my abdominal area was "ugly" to quote the Dr. My small intestines had gotten tangled in a hernia and my gall bladder walls were thick and full of stones. So during the exploratory surgery, they removed the GB and said they tacked my small intestines and called it a day. Feb 8th, I was back in the ER with SEVERE abdominal pain. 3/4 of my small intestines had become tangled again and they died off. After the third surgery to remove the dead tissue, I had a heart attack. LAFB was unable to help with that so I was turfed to Portsmouth Naval Med Ctr to learn 2 days later that the MI killed off 2/3 of my colon. So that was mostly removed and an ostomy was placed. I had a PICC line and a feeding tube attached giving me 4000+ calories a day. I dropped to 133 lbs. I'm 5'11" and started at 347. After 3 blood infections and a temp of 106.4 on the last one, they chose to leave it out. The feeding tube was removed in the summer as i felt like i was going to puke every second I had the fluid going into it. I am supposed to ear 3500+ calories a day and 135g of Proteins. As many of you know, this is almost impossible. I have to eat 6+ full meals a day and am supposed to drink 2 liters of water a day. in that effort, im back down to 136 and have to be at 150 by my surg date. IDK if im going to make it, but im trying hard! I had the RNY at Ports by another Navy surgeon who has since retired. Ive worked with Dr Barker for many months and i feel that he is more than capable of the reversal and would refer me to a more qualified Dr if he felt otherwise. He is also going to reverse the colonostomy while he's In there. I am VERY excited about that as well as i am WAYYYY over this bag! I welcome any comments, concerns, etc as long as they are constructive. I will try to update afterwards and beyond with my progress. good luck to everyone as well!

Hi,
My sister recently had gastric bypass this past August 2013, she had many complications and through much consultation, she and her doctor decided to do a reversal in February. Hoping severe nausea and vomiting would go away. She has had many scopes to widen her stomach and lots of scar tissue that made things more complicated. She is still having severe complications with the reversal (ongoing vomiting, nausea). She is unable to keep anything down and it's very scary. She has has many hospital stays and all they do is give her strong medications that is just a short term solution making her want the meds. She is on administrative leave and her health/body is not getting any better. Her doctor has done all the testing stating that everything came back clear basically washing his hands of this leaving my sister in horrible state. I'm at a loss to understand her complications and wanting to see if anyone who had this reversal experienced these side effects and did it get better. It's so sad and I believe her case may be rare. She's depressed and her health is not good at all as she is continually losing weight (below what she should) and is not getting any nutrients. I'm desperate to find out what resources and support she needs. Can anyone advise me as to what I can do to help?
I had a gastric bypass 20 years ago and the last several years I have had lots of stomach pain and the last year I have lost additional 60 pounds and can't keep weight on. I have severe oxalosis and the nephroligist wants me to reverse the gastric bypass. What are your thoughts? Do you know of anyone in Utah that has had it reversed with success? My body can not aborsb the nutrients. I can't work, need some information.

wonderful person who has always taken the very best care of me in my worst situations.Theres not one dr. out there whose hands I would choose to put my life in. Hes VERY well known nation wide although I'll keep his identity at discretion. Although he reassures me that the risks are the same as with the RNY surgery I am still scared to death!! I'd like to hear from anyone out there whos had the surgery and everything about, what they went through, etc. Anything to help put my mind at ease. Its weird that I endured the RNY surgery to help save my life and now I'm having to endure a reversal for the same reason. Please leave me a message on OH because I was unaware we were not allowed to advertise our email in the post as I would prefer responses directly to my address. Thank you!
