Hi Cher, My hair started to fall out at 4 months too...I was told it was because of lack of calories not protein.  THere is really nothing you can do about it but wait it out.  Mine fell out for about two months, now it seems fine and is growing back.  I was freaking out about it at first though, I was plugging up the drain after every shower.

Nioxin?

I didn't lose any hair or not that I noticed with the lap band but I lost tons with the gastric bypass.  They also said that anesthesia and all the medication may have contributed.  (I had to have my suture line reinforced when it came apart and I had the perforated bowel)  My hair is fine anyway.  I went to Fantastic Sams and got lucky because the girl I use there volunteers for people with cancer that lose their hair due to chemo/radiation.  She cut my hair fairly short and recommended I use Nioxin products because they help your scalp and can aid in the hair growing back.  They had travel kits on sale so I bought one to try.    I'm eight months out and it's still coming out a little and not growing back that much but I had the added trauma of the stroke and the infections.  I know, I know, what is a girl that had all that happen and is half blind doing worrying about her hair?  We can't help be girls, can we?  Anyone have problems with your nails?  Mine got a big ridge and then started peeling off from a little above the cuticle. - it was kind of painful - I wore band aids around them half of the time I was in the nursing home so they wouldn't catch on something.  .  They are growing out but are still very soft

I'd like to know if anyone has any good suggestions for the hair problem.  I'm taking y vitamins and drinking those nasty Isopures.

Hi,
I wonder how much of it has to do with anesthesia as well.  I have had issues with calories/protein, but I have also had 5 surgeries in less than a year and my biggest losses in hair has always followed surgery.  I know there are things that people swear by that you can take, but they are expensive.  I can tell you from many bouts of this that it does slow down/stop and you will start to see the little baby hair starting to grow back soon.  Hang in there!

No it's not because of the protein, it's because of all the hormones that are trapped in our fat cells that are being released as we lose weight.
Also I know for myself if it were all protein I would have bald as a baby's ass before WLS and only now would I be growing hair.

Try adding Biotin to your vitamins--I take 5,000mg a day it will NOT make your hair grow back faster but I will make the new hair a lot stronger...but know you'll be shaving your legs, armpits, etc.. alot more.

You can also try a cute short sassy haircut for a few months and coloring your hair thickens the hairshaft so you'll appear to have more hair.

201 pounds lost since surgery!! And I'm 2 1/2 inches taller too!!

And YES I still eat Carbs and Fats but I know what portion control is!!

I want to thank all of you for talking about this issue. I am 11 months post op and I started noticing some hair loss after about 5-6 months. But in the last 2 months it has gotton more noticable. I was really starting to worry. My hair has always been very fine and I've always had a problem with not having very much hair to begin with. Needless to say I can't afford to lose a whole lot. I do keep it short and that does help. Reading what some of you wrote about it growing back has given me encouragement.

Thanks Again

Try looking up "telogen effluvium" - it's very common to have hair loss 2-4 AFTER a surgery or stressful period. Usually lasts a few months and then hair grows back.

Sure does freak me out.

I'm freaking out too. I had surgery lap rny 1/13/09, so about four months ago...my hair started falling out a little more than usual a month or less ago. It wasn't much more than usual, and I even thought I was probably being paranoid.

However, now it has clearly thinned a lot. I have always had a LOT of hair. It's really thick, and each hair is big,  too, so lots lots lots of hair. On one hand that probably means I can lose more than some other people w/o it being noticeable. On the other hand I'm getting big wads of hair coming out every shower!

I wash my hair every day. I'm wondering if it would help to NOT wa**** every day. Maybe that damages it more? Probably nothing I do is making it fall out more...but I keep finding stray hairs all over my clothes, my sheets.

It is REALLY freaking me out.

I have less than half the hair I had a couple of months ago. No bald spots or anything, but it sounds like I'm not even halfway through the hair loss process. I can tell it's about half as much as before because of how big it was when I'd put it in a ponytail...how many times I'd have to wrap the elastic around. Now I have to do it TWICE as much.

Of course, it doesn't matter, because I'm afraid to wear my hair up or do anything tight with it for fear more hair will fall out, so it's always VERY lightly secured, or left straight down.

I guess I'm not looking for answers so much as just wanting to  tell people who understand how much this is freaking me out.

So. Thanks for listening.

Oh...and you know how many/most of you have at the bottom of your posts something like:

Lap RNY 1/13/2009

377/281/165

Which is my pre-op weight, my current weight, and my goal weight...

Anyway. Is that just something you set up in your signature?

yup, it is just something set up in the signature area.

I am almost 5 months out and I thought that I wouldn't lose my hair at all.  Wishful thinking I guess.  I have noticed in the last 2 weeks that I have hair on my shirt, or in an eyelash or tangled up in my fingers or somewhere.  At first I thought I was just being paranoid but now I know that I am starting to lose some hair.  I can't see the difference yet but I am freaking out anyway.  I have seen women who have thinning hair and you can see straight through their scalp.  I am afraid that this is what I am in for.  Eeeek and ugh.
