Neuropathy, burning palms, numbness, weakness-Need Feedback

I posted this the surgery RNY area, but wondering if this would perhaps be a more appropriate location. I urgently need feedback as I'm at Mayo now, trying to untangle  this 2 year nightmare. If  I've erred in double posting, I apologize and plead not guilty by reason of mental disease(panicked at the moment) as welll as general cyber ignorance:

Exact same response as armywife 23 w/ tingling/numbness in lower extremities after being in sit/squat position for several minutes, only the situation worsened with time and now includes intense burning in both hands, carpal tunnel like pain in arms and wrists, neck and thoracic spine pain, , weakness and numbness in all extremities(right side more dominantly)t, near constant moderate to very severe headache...along with other odd symptoms, like sweating profusely on only the right side of my head/face when I take in food, hypersensitivity to cold, fatigue, intermittent memory, cognitive and balance problems and at times feeling as if adrenalin is turned on 24/7 for weeks at a time. I've seen 22+ providers (traditional and non-traditional) since this began in early 2007(Prior to Mayo where I have just begun the process of seeing many, many doctors and undergoing extensive tests) and including my original surgeon who treated me like a drug seeker and denied possible correlations. No one has thus far  explained or relieved the symptoms which have been debilitating . I continue to work, denying myself any other option as I must maintain the insurance for myself and my partner and it is a much needed/desired distraction. Trying desperately to get to the bottom of it now. Though no conclusions yet, one neurologist noted that neuropathy is a known bariatric surgery side effect. I am so sorry to alarm and others, but I urgently need feedback from others w/ similar issues. My lap RNY GBPWLS was 2/05 and I'm down 170 lbs and I have been absolutely compliant with all aftercare. Onset of symptoms was 3 yrs subsequent to WLS. Weight loss was slow and intermittent, stabilized now have suddenly lost 45 lbs since 6/08 w/ no good explanation. My world had grown so small prior to WLS and life had taken on such a wonderful turn after. I now find myself in yet a smaller world feeling very alone, hugely inadequate and often made to feel these symptoms are all in my head (the pros say they are not...I consulted w/ several, just to be certain). Add to this menopause (maybe....2 false "starts" in 2 years), degenerative spine problems and a long history of medication resistant major depression. I feel my life hopelessly and helplessly slipping away from me and often so depleted I can't navigate the many systems required.

As I pour over posts, I see many have researched similar issues. If anyone has suggestions regarding direction, research sources/articles or other guidance, please share. I really need you

Are you taking in your vitamins.  I found a post that talks about what happens when you aren't taking your vitamins or monitoring your lab work.

I'm sorry this is happening to you.

I wish I had more answers.  I hope that site helps.

You should consider posting on the Texas or California website. I see those message boards move quickly.

Best Wishes

I haven't had WLS (nor do I plan to), but I may be able to help a tiny bit.  Have you tried a Gluten-Free diet?  Go to www.celiac.com for more information on what is involved.  Unfortunately, since the WLS is basically causing malabsorption you will probably not be able to completely eliminate your aches and pains, but removing gluten from your diet may help.  You may want to have your doctor run a Celiac Screen Panel on you to see if you have intestinal damage, but I don't know if the test will be affected by having WLS.

The complications that are being seen in long-term WLS patients are eerily similar to those seen in patients with untreated / undiagnosed Celiac Disease.  All of their complications are caused by malabsorption, but once they remove gluten from their diet, the malabsorption usually disappears, along with their complications.  In your case, the pains might be eased; then again, they may not.  It certainly can't hurt to try GF to see what happens. Good luck, and if you have any questions about GF, please feel free to contact me.

Hi ... I know exactly where you are at honey ... I suffer all of your symptoms and more ... but I am nerly 30 years post op and had one of the old gastric stapling procedures, so my health has only declined in this way in the past 10 years. What can I say ... this is the world of post WLS complications. There are a lot of diiffernt conditions that are considored long term complications of this surgery and they are quite well documented, but there is a lot of special testing involved and it can take a very long time to get a diagnosis and treatment which is very frustrating. I do have a web site with my story on it and also quite a lot of links to information/articles. There is also a link on my front page to a site in the USA (a sister site) that has alot of info on it. On the contact page there is a link to a support group that I am a member of that has a lot of people in it, who are in the same position as you. I have found it to be a very friendly and informative group.

The site link is: http://s1.webstarts.com/ozobesitysurgery-info/

Some of the conditions you may want to get your doc's to explore are pernicious anemia, chronic fatigue, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, nueropathy's and cealiacs. I am not a medical professional and I can only offer advice as someone who is travelling the same journey. My heart goes out to you.
