dental problems after surgery?
I had my surgery july 16 2005 and in the last year my teeth have started to rot away to the point i can not eat anything hard and when I brush my teeth my teeth fall off in pieces I am Military Dependent and trying to get tricare to cover this because I had a dentist in Maryland tell me he had some patients have the same problem but since I am not longer his patient I can not get that information sent to me :( I am frustrated because the dental insurance will only pay a small part which leaves me 6000 to come up with to get all teeth pulled and dentures in.I am in so much pain and I am mad that I was not told this could happend I was 266 when I had surgery I am now down to 95-110 I wear my daughters clothes size 12 and 14 in girls I do have a little pudge and the rest of the skin in the back area just dropped down if anyone knows how to get this fixed through tricare or has had this problem please let me know
thank you

Dental problems are a frequent and seldom told complication of wls - due to malnutrition issues the teeth tend to decay. There is some thought too that the exposure of a large number of protein drinks may have some impact too.
Good luck - I know nothing about military - so can't help you on that issue.
However, I would imagine you could find somewhere cheaper then $6000 for the total pull and dentures - my husband had his done a few years ago (NOT due to wls) and we paid about $1,000 after insurance.

Do you have the military dental plan ?
Can you go to a dental school?
Maybe they can help and be a lot less expensive
they still have to be supervised.
Did you ever have low Vit D after wls?
I did and my teeth had problems after that.
I took all my supplements like I was supposed to and it still happened.
I guess I needed to supplement More.....

I had my surgery in 2004 and recently got dentures after my teeth literally rotted out of my mouth while I was pregnant with my daughter. Like others have mentioned its an untold complication. I later found out from the oral surgeon that it's quite common especially those who get pregnant, as the baby begins to take ALL our nutrients. Luckily, I am currently on state insurance and because the dentures werre deemed needed they paid for them. I know a friend of mine's husband recently had just his uppers done and only had to pay 1000 so 6000 seems steep, I would really look into several different places! Dentures will make you feel 10 times better though, not only does my self esteem feel better but Im not constantly in mouth pain.
