Anyone with a Gastric Fistula?
So I just found out for sure that I have a gastric fistula which has prevented me from ever getting to goal and to gain some weight back! I have done some research on it, but not a lot out there. Has anyone had one after sometime. I am four years out from my surgery and just want to know what to expect from the repair. I know my surgeon will tell me but I want to hear first hand from someone like me... if there is one. Did they do a revision or just repair the fistula? Thanks in advance for any help!!
I had Roux en Y at the the end of Sept 2004. Felt sick right from the start - burning on my left side. Unlike, most fistulas, mine kept me from eating or drinking - if I tried to eat I couldn't swallow my own saliva and had to run to the sink to force a finger down my throat. It was horrible. I was hospitalized for a week but the doctors just acted like I was not being tough enough. After my umpteenth endoscopy, I took a swig of water while talking to a nurse and had to run to the sink to spit it out because I could not swallow. The scheduled a special test after which my doctor (at Cleveland Clinic, no less) hugged me and told me I would need a more invasive surgery because the pouch and stomach had reattached. As sick as I was, they still made me wait a few weeks for surgery, which occurred around mid Dec 2005. It was not an easy recovery. I tried to eat something in mid Jan 2006 and got horrible stomach pains. Seems all the barium they gave me formed a block -- you think they would have thought of that! Even when I was in the hospital no one mentioned that I wouldn't drink the nutritiional drinks - they just sent a psychologist! I don't think they put vitamins in my IV! Well, I did survive despite 2 more hospitalizations that turned out to be lung related -- CC filled me with antibiotics for 6 days & sent me home - my local hospital had to repeat this 6 months later when I relapsed but THEY called in a lung specialist & cured me. I went into the hospital a size 6 and left a 4 -- my largest size was only a 1x and 224 lbs. Life did get much better - I just fight anemia, hair loss & fatigue. When I had surgery there was little almost nothing on the web about them. They seperated the two and removed most of my remaining stomach through the same incisions -- I guess it was angry. LOL. You have to get it fixed before you will be on the road to recovery - good luck!
