XPOST: Gall Bladder Surgery Last Monday and in BIG Pain

Hi Guys,

I am not usually a wimp but I am feeling really badly after GB surgery on Monday.  I am sucking down Oxycodone like it is water and feeling terrible.  I am actually watching the clock to make sure I get the pain meds on time.  The gas pains are incredible and sorry for this TMI but when do you go to the bathroom again?  Should I take Miralax or something to get that party started, or what?   This is almost as painful as the bypass and I am not seeing any real improvement.  While they were in me, they also searched around (exploratory) and found adhesions and removed them and am wondering if that is why I am feeling so much pain.

Anyway, thanks for any insight you can offer.

: )

Lisa,
I just had my GB out almost a week ago, and I was also in some big time pain, and I also like to think of myself as a tough cookie :)  I also had adhesions removed that were irritating my intestines.  I think most of the pain is from the trapped air from the surgery (lap surgery right?, not open?).  I think that pain can be underestimated, and then the constipation on top of it.  I don't know if they sent you home with Colace or any other stool softener (sorry TMI), but that will help.  Here is some more TMI, but it may give you hope LOL  I had not gone to the bathroom since 12/28, and I just went for the first time a couple days ago and that really was when the pain started to ease up a bit.  I hope this helps, and remember that the pain medicine, although it helps with pain, it is in itself constipating, so it can make the battle worse before it gets better. Take care and feel better soon!

I feel for you.  I had my GB surgery in a middle of November and it felt like the pain was worse than with RNY.  It lasted only a few days.  But still.
The gas pain was horrible.  I took less pain pills after RNY than after the GB.  be patient, this will pass too.
As for BM - I di enema on the second day, and the third, and ... untill I did not need it anymore. Antherwise I would have been in real trouble.

Trying to go. when you in pain... please....

Walking helped me a lot and massage.  Shoulders massage was what i got nad it help relief the pain.

((hugs))) I know you need that now more than ever...

If nothing else helps - take M of M.  for BM

Lisa,
I am so sorry to hear about your pain. I also had my gall bladder out in November. Everyone tole be it would be like I was on "vacation" after a few days. After 1O days I was still taking Percocets around the clock.  I had some abnormal labs (LFT'S)  so my doctor sent me for testing abdominal ct, and a hida-scan. All test were negative. It took me 3 and a half weeks to stop feeling the pain. It was then that I realized how bad I really felt

I am happy to say that I feel great now, so don't give up hang in there it does get better.

If you are taking that much pain medications
and haven't had a bowel movement you may be constipated or impacted, you need to call your doctor and let him know, that may be the cause of your pain. I  was also constipated and was taking 2-3 colace daily which didn't really help. Now I take BENIFIBER 2 tsp 3 times a day and  I go every day with out difficulty. Make sure you ask your doctor before trying anything.

I hope this helps you and that you feel better real soon. I thought I was the only one who experienced such pain after a Lap-choli and I have heard from  many many people who have had the same experience.

Right there with everyone else! Had my GB out in FEb 08 and OMG I was so not prepared for the pain! I took milk of magnesia, but dont overdue it, LOL.  Gas pain is horrible, I dont understand why people say that when babies smile it's Gas! HELLO! The gas I have exp'd never made me smile! LOL
I also had liver biopsies and the dr said that could have been the source of the "extra" pain. Try walking, it helps with being stiff but also helps with the gas!
Good luck!!!

wow I had my gb removed while I had a hernia repair I had no pain like you and some others have discribed. I would start taking miralax and a stool softner asap..you do not want to get clogged up and YOU DO NOT WANT TO STRAIN>>>i did and popped my stitches then I sneezed and now I have a hernia back.
Aboutt he pain and gas...WALK the more you are able to the less pain you will have. Were you laposcopic or open? I was the latter....
being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it

Hello OH family I am researching this topic after the surgery. So happy to see I am not alone in the pain, gas and overall experience. My Gall bladder although stone free was not emptying which was confirmed by Hyda scan and out it came on 3/12/10. I am still in hospital going home today after a miserable day of pain and gas etc. Yes so much more painful than the RNY and I had to explain and re=explain to my nurses and docs my anatomy is not the same as the average belly and I need to be dealt with differently. So although they were trying to kick me out the door i requested IVF put back up i could not eat or drink, pain was unbearable and I needed something to get the gasses going. Well 24 hours later and deinate improvement. I am sure the recovery will still have its challenges and I hope i am ready to tackle them because I have been a sad mess these past few days. Reglan, miralax, zofran, percocet, ivf oh my this has not been fun. My pain tolerance is obviously different with the weight loss. I was a tough cookie I no longer am I have sadly discovered.
Had this not come unexpectantly I would have gone to my RNY surgeon for the GB surgery I believe in my heart they would have been more sympathetic.
