Chronic Fatigue or Fibromyalgia AFTER WLS
I am currently 4 1/2 years post-op. I am anemic and on B-12 shots. Over the last 6 months I have developed all the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue and/or Fibromyalgia. I know that anyone that has been there knows what a frustrating time it is to try and obtain a diagnosis. I can sleep for 12 hours get up and take a shower and go back to bed. I have gone through the it's your diet, you are depressed, you need to cut out caffeine, etc. I have never been more compliant to a doctor and never more miserable!
Has anyone not developed either of these until after WLS? I am looking for any suggestions on getting a correct and timely diagnosis. My quality of life is suffering terribly!
Well I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia prior to the RNY but I am currently in the same fatigue situation as you. I just got my extensive lab results back and was told I am very low in zinc and that my red blood cell count is low as well. However my GP thinks other than a zinc supplement, that that is all I need to do. After some more extensive research on my part this morning, apparently the hair loss, fatigue, odorous urine is something more serious. So I guess I'll be making a trip to my surgeon who is out of state.
As a side note, I don't believe that anyone is more compliant with their vitamin regieme, food intake, etc than I am so for me to pop up with a vitamin defficiency is a huge surprise to me. I hope everyone is getting their labs done routinely as to head things off at the pass.

Vanessa,
I'm not a doctor, but I do have fibromyalgia. I'm pre-op for DS.
Different things work for different people with fibro. I know where you're coming from regarding the energy drain.
There is a prescription drug that's just been approved to treat the pain..it's called Lyrica. Muscle relaxants might help, too.
Perhaps your doctor can prescribe warm water exercise for you. That helped me tremendously. You have to be careful, though. Being in the water has a way of minimizing the stress you feel on your muscles, and overdoing it can put you to bed for a while. My doctor also prescribes Provigil .

I too am 4 1/2 years post-op. About 4 months ago I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. I had originally lost 100 pounds but slowly gained back 55. Now that I want to get back on track with weight loss, I'm finding it very difficult. What I once could do physically, I cannot do now. My doctor put me on Cymbalta, which is supposed to help with depression and pain, but it didn't work for me. Now I take 1500 mg of Tylenol as needed and prescription muscle relaxers as needed (they just make me more tired). I suggest going through a series of blood tests. They had to rule out Epstein Barr virus (mono), Lupus, and did a sed rate as well as a complete blood panel. After all tests were normal, my pcp diagnosed me with fibromyalgia. She even authorized a temporary disabled person parking pass for me. Good luck with your journey. It truly is a difficult one with pain and fatigue.
