Has anyone had this problem......
Hi,
I had my WLS 12-17-2004,with in a few weeks of surgery my old stomach stop working...my new pouch was working with no problem. Whento the hospital and they pull a drain tube in my old stomach for a month and then it was ok. I was doing great and had lost 110 lbs, but 2-2007 my old stomach stop working again. Went to the Dr. ..... he but a drain tube in my old stomach for 3 months and did surgery on it and all seem to be o****il 3-2008, I have started to have the pain again and I know the the old stomach is actting up again.
i am now trying to find a Doctor that will know what to do about this with no luck. One Doctor talked about removing my old stomach. My WLS pouch is still working great.
Has anyone heard of this or been thur it, I need help!!!
Martha
Hi Jenni,
You are totaly right about the old stomach, but mine is what they call a lazy stomach. I produces the digestive juices but it does not release them into the intestines. So my stomach just gite full and the juices turn bad and makes me hurt bad. So April 14th they will remove my old stomach.
I will let you all know how it goes., Martha
I had RNY also - the old stomach was left in - my surgeons said in the event I needed a revision. But I just posted a related problem with my old stomach - ulcers found at the stapling site - the difficulties they had in getting a G-tube in several times (under CT Scan) because the remnant stomach had flattened out and kept shifting away from their poking.
I too wassurprised at how much bile came out of the old stomach while I had my G-tube in place.
You'll see in my posting that I investigated what they knew about remnant stomachs over the long haul and the answer - nothing - no research except for people who had stomach cancer and had parts removed - not for RNY patients - EXCEPT in lab animals some strong infor that excess bile may be related to erosion of the lining and production of stomach cancer.
My surgeons are at University Hospitals of Cleveland - a friend of mine is bariatric RN at Mayo Clinic - neither place has had much to do with ulcers in the old stomach.
I would be reluctant to take a "currently" healthy stomach - producing some juices and bile - out (in the event I needed a revision) - and am opting for careful following of labs and periodic
G-tube access endoscopies into the old stomach to get cancer early in the game - if thats a real risk for us.
This the biggest reason I and so many others have choosen the Duodenal Switch. It has always seemed absurd to me to have the remnent left there. The DS just makes your stomach smaller 3-4 oz. and it works and functions as normal. No left over to worry about. How about a revision to DS.On the revision board there will be people that refer you to a dr.that will give you back a functioning stomach and eleminate the pouch.Just my thoughtys....bonnie
