Stomach problems 6 yrs. post op.
Hi, I just hit my 6 year anniversary on January 22, 2008. Had a revision in October 2005. I was 355 when I had my first surgery. Today I weigh 245. I lost, gained etc. After having back surgery in Sept. 2006 I had gained back about 35 pounds. It was a combination of no activity, side effect from medication and snacking more often. Over the years I've had nausea here and there. After my surgery I had some strictures that needed dilation. My first year I had nausea on and off. It was a bumpy ride but still worth it. I've had horrible nausea for the past month I would say. About two weeks ago I got horrible stomach pain. It hurts right under the left rib cage. When the dr. presses on it, it is all pouch pain. I actually went to the emergency room one night because it was so bad. They did a cat scan and said it was okay. They blamed it on the antibiotics I was taking for a bladder infection. So I went to see a gastro dr. He did an endoscopy Monday. He said the Esophagus and stomach are inflamed. He did a biopsy to see if anything exciting is going on. The acid reflux is horrible. I'm taking Prevacid twice a day. I'm popping Tums and drinking Mylanta. I'm barely eating. Just toast and eggs. Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this. I don't have a gallbladder. It was taken out in 1992 (10 years before the gastric bypass surgery). It's not an ulcer. I take a bunch of medicine for muscle and nerve pain. I take Oxycodone for pain. Been taking over a year. I take with food and none should bother my stomach now. Thanks for any input.
I had the same stomach pains and it turned out to be ulcers. I had one erupt and had to have emergency surgery to get it repaired. Have them check for ulcers and keep taking anti-acid meds. I still take them everyday. My stomach doesn't hurt everyday but a few times a week so I know I have more.

Thanks. I had an Endoscopy last Monday and it did not show any ulcers. I thought it may be that too. It showed an inflammation of the Esophagus and stomach. Probably from all the acid coming up. Today was the first day the nausea was not killing me. It is still there though. The pain is getting worse and moving down though. So I will make another call to the Dr. I think he said Upper GI is the next step. Another nasty test. Last time I had to keep the stuff in my mouth becuase it was going through my stomach too fast. That was before the revision. The pain makes me nervous. I had 5 pelvic/abdominal surgeries since 1990 so I start thinking bowel obstruction. But I assume it would have shown up on the Cat Scan. Oh well. Will stay on the doctor for answers. Only thing helping the pain is Oxycodone that I take for my leg and back. Thanks for the response. I appreciate it.
I am glad that it didn't show any ulcers. Let me tell you....when mine erupted, I thought I was going to die it hurt so bad. I am careful now to take acid reducers daily to kept the acid at bay. What can I say.....stress and being a single mom of 4 go hand and hand. I try to keep the stress down. Stress seems to build up the acid. Good luck and let me know what happens.

Thanks. I never had acid problems before the surgery or after really. It really felt like what I read an ulcer felt like. At least the nausea is a tiny bit better. The pain is moving though. I have a call into the Dr. for Monday so will see what the next step is. I'll keep you updated. Thanks again.
I keep having a similar problem...I get left sided very severe abdominal pain...I have been to the ER about six times....My surgeon thinks I have some sort of surgical adhesions, but there is no evidence on the CAT scans , the MRI, the Ultra sound or Upper GI.....I have no acid or ulcer like problems though...The doc also is considereing the possibility that my resected intesting around the the pouch is actually twisting...I get pain so severe that I have screamed and I get a cold sweat, followed by an overall clamminess and nausea.
I have acutally feeling pretty awful for the last two days....I think this time though it is a drug reaction. I have been having severe lower abdominal cramping for the last two days. I called the doc who got me a prescription for Bental and it seems to working...The nearly constant cramping has turned into a very severe contraction like cramp about every twenty minutes or so...The area i around my navel is terribly tender, if I push down on it it seems to set off intense pain.. It also feels unusually hard..and distenended, I can hardly tolerate a waste band...so I have on a pair of stretchy pains rolled down....my whole abdomen feels like I have been working out...I took an injection of Methotrexate, an arthritis drug and this whole thing got started then. Thank God I know I'm not pregnant, and don't think this is a gynecologic problem, because I can hear my intenstines making noise...I am very naussous, but no fever, diarrhea or vomiting...I took some bental, and as I said, the cramping is less severe, but I feel terrible....
The surgeon has said when I get severe pain, I should come in for an evaluation, But it is a holiday weekend...I am hoping to avoid it...So in the mean time, I am trying some ginger tea and a warm heating pad.....
Did you ever find out what the pain was from, as I had my surgery April, 2007 and have stomach pain daily and have to lay in bed with a heating pad and go to sleep, this stomach pain even wakes me up in the middle of the night. Also whenever I drink protein drinks (any kind) I get extremely nauseated and sick. I have an endoscopy at the end of the month with my GI doc before seeing my surgeon.
