Levaquin, ab cramping, and diarehia

Hello, I was put on a round of antibiotics after a serious incision infection that landed me in the hospital for 4 days. Prior to the incident my bowel movements were ok. However since the infection and the meds, at night I am going to the bathroom for 2-5x a night (not eating anything overnight). The experience causes back pain, abdominal pain, a lot of praying, and then a few droplets. The ordeal has me fustrated, and wishing I had left well enough along, after all I was fat but healthy.  I am down to one antibiotic, with an open wound, but me thinking this a side effect of the antibiotic I would really like to just stop the antibiotic and pray that my incisional infection doesnt return, and that this diarehia would go away. After researching on webmd and google, the symptoms are similiar to irritable bowel syndrome, however I have never had the issue before. If anyone has gone thru this PLEASE ADVISE.  (and I apologize if I was a bit graphic, however every detail counts)

It's very important that you call the doctor right away. For people who have had surgery in a hospital, there is a hospital acquired infection called C-Diff.  It is a bacteria that can enter the intestines when the normal bateria that is already in your bowels get killed because of antibiotics.  The symptoms are severe diarrhea, followed by dehydration.  you need to take very specific antibiotics for this infection.  You need to get a culture of your stool in order to see if thats what is going on.  It is very common, but must treated right away Good Luck, Kelly

thanks for your response. I went to the doc, and he believes that the antibiotics destroyed the good bacteria in my intestines. So they put me on another round of antibiotics. He states right now everything is just running thru me including water. Geez.... I am really starting to regret the surgery

I had levquin for an infection several times over the past 4 years.  I also had problems with my bowels and after I would finish the levaquin my tounge would swell and develop bumps on it.  I know that I had a reaction to the medicine and no longer will be prescribed levequin.  It does wipe your system out.  Good Luck Amy

C-Diff / SBBO    At any rate, you were likely put on Flagyl to correct the imbalance BUT you should take PROBIOTICS after your treatment!!!!  You may take it every day for the rest of your life.  It has helped me tremendously! This is good bacteria in a capsule form to help replinish the digestive tract.  You can find it at any health store. I use Nature's Sunshine brand which I find to be the best.  I use the one that has 11 different types of good bacteria for both the small intestine and colon. www.naturessunshine.com Search for Probiotic Eleven and it will come right up! If you don't use this particular product, it will help inform you a bit; however, I do recommend that you find one that has bacteria for the small intestine and the colon (large intestine). I hope this helps!

I have two sides to my brain - a right side and a left side.  The trouble is sometimes there is nothing left in the right side and nothing right in the left side.

If you have not had one...ask for a stool culture for C. Diff.  Very important that this be ruled out. Levaquin is notorious for causing C. Diff.  It is also contagious and you need to be aware of this.  My father has had C. Diff since being treated with Levaquin last Oct. for a rupturing gall bladder. Please have the culture done ASAP. Do not mess around with this.

Hi,  I had the same exact thing.  Had diarreha constantly for 6 weeks.  Almost died.  was in and out of hospital due to dehydradation.  It was not C-diff either.  The antibiotics stripped my system of good bacteria.  Also did not have IBS either.  Had a colonscopy.  Don't know why or how but it went away after 6 months.  My prayers and thoughts are with you.
