possible internal hernia?

Hi.  I ws 4 years out last month and have been dealing with the exact same issues since April.  I wound up in the ER and they ran all the usual tests... but didn't have a bariatric specialist look at my stuff, OR pay attention when I kept insisting I was RNY.  They took my gall bladder after a diagnosis of "pancreatitis" and 4 day hospital stay.  It didn't fix me, so I went to gastroenternologist - who has since diagnosed me with lactose intolerance, IBS, and esophagitis.  Still - NO relief.  I'm bloated, miserable, and can't eat solid food.  I saw a bariatric guy last week?  INTERNAL HERNIA - let's fix it next Tuesday.

We are different and I had forgotten how important that is.  See a person who specializes in bariatric patients.  The other guys don't know what to look for unless it smacks them in the face by accident!

...sigh...   I suppose I should quit hiding and call the doctor today. I have intermittent pain. I just knew right away it was my stomach/pouch and now it's becoming more and more frequent.
I don't think I should prolong it anymore. Obviously....after reading others posts! YIKES!

So....stay tuned!

Hello to all you Post Bypass friends,

I had my Gastric Bypass in 2005 here in Phoenix. For the last  1 to 1 1/2 years I have had bouts of intermittent INTENSE pain, like a knife cutting into me. I have had 2 children and never had anything like this. After having countless tests, scopes and ER visits, today I underwent lap. explore and they found a Petersons hernia.  I am sooooo relieved as I had doctors tell me there was nothing wrong.
My greatest advise would be, as mentioned about, pay attention to your body and let your bypass surgeon do the surgery. It was as if he knew what it was before the surgery.

Thanks

I had open RNY gastric bypass 9 years ago and have just found out that I have a Peterson's Hernia.  The Dr. tells me that it has been getting larger over the years and is now quite large.  I am not able to get into surgery for another month.  I just hope I can last through this pain for a month.

Sara,

I am so sorry you are living with this. It is so terrible. I finally convinced my PCP to give me pain meds to carry around. I have no recommendations, as the pain made no sense according to position, diet or anything.
Please keep me posted. The recovery from this is not as bad as the bypass but still feels like a truck hit me.

Glad to hear that the recover is not as bad as the bypass.  I didn't have a hard time with my recover from bypass. In fact I didn't take many of my pain meds. With this I'm having to take pain meds just to eat. I will be glad when Feb. 10 gets here so I can get this pain over with. Today I'm having a fairly good day but I haven't eaten either (and I know that's not good). I will keep you updated on my recovery.

Please do keep me posted. I have felt this pain and the only thing that would someone relieve it would be to roll around, take a warm bath and when able lay on my left side...

Thursday is the day that (as my son would say) get fixed. I am sooooo tired of this pain.  One good thing is that I have lost 12 pounds in this last month since I can't eat or drink without hurting.  I never realized how much severe pain can drain a person.  The only bad part is that my hemoglobin count was 11.4 the week after Christmas and now it is 8.1.  The Dr. had me off my iron for a week before I had my scopes done (thought I was bleeding from somewhere).  He has put me back on it.  I am taking 325mg 2x a day.  All I want to do is sleep.  I will post sometime after my surgery to let you know how I am doing.

Hello Sara,

You are so experiencing the same things I did. God bless on the surgery Thursday. You will feel like a new woman. I also needed iron but the hematologist said I needed IV iron as oral iron was not going to cut it.

You will feel SO MUCH better after this surgery is over.

Just thought I would let you know how things went.  I went in on Feb 11 to have the surgery and had to have 4 units of blood instead. My hemoglobin was down to 5.8.  I went back in for surgery on Feb 22 and after surgery still had to have 2 units of iron through the IV.  I was in VERY bad shape.  My intestines was wrapped through the hernia twice and they were twisted.  I was told that I was very fortunate that I did not have a blockage.  I went back to work last week and man did I pay for it...lol.  I am on the way to recovery.  I tell everyone that was one heck of a diet.  I ended up loosing 20 lbs. from Christmas until I had surgery.  I wouldn't recommend that diet to anyone and I sure don't want to do that again.  The pain at times was so bad that when it would ease up I would fall asleep.  I told my dr that the pain from this surgery was much more painful than the Gastric Bypass I had.  He agreed with me.

Have a wonderful day!
