Elevated Liver Enzymes 3 months post op!
I have been really stressed out about my bloodwork. It stated that my liver enzymes are ten times what the should be! I now I am all freeked out about what is wrong, I called my surgeron the next day he said he could see me on friday 22nd... well we drove all the way to stanford and all he did is order me more bloodwork, and a gall badder u/s and see him in two weeks. So now I am having anxiety about what is wrong with me, He had me do a bunch of Hepatitis testing, so I am feeling a bit helpless, but my husband went with me and he said the doctor didn't sound too worried... I feel like everyone is telling me to get over it and get on with my life, and try not worry. I know I have been overracting, but I wasn't expecting any problems, everything else had been going so well. I don't know I feel a bit discouraged and depressed about everything...I keep on having to miss work because I just feel tired, nauseus, and just not myself and I don't want to make mistakes. I have been very irratble with my husband and 2year old daughter. I don't know just wondering if anyone else had been thru this?? Also prior to these blood results, Dr. Morton, did a liver biopsy while he was in there doing the Lap RNY. He said my liver was 4'xs it should be and very fatty. The biopsy came back fine. I just want to know why am I having problems now...?? It's really keeping me up at night. Has anyone else have had this problem?? Thank you in advance for the info.

As I would tell my wife "BREATH".
I too had my enzyme levels out of whack. They were quite high. I had went to my PCP and of course he did blood tests. I was about three months out. He did the Hepatits test to me as well and it came out negative. He had me come back in two weeks and did another one. They came back a little better. Come back in one month. After a month they were down again. That time only one was still high.
My surgeons asst. told me my PCP was doing the right thing and it was early and not to worry. Sometimes it takes things a while to level out after surgery. I go back to him next month, it will seven and a half months since surgery. He said they will do a bone scan and run more blood tests.
He said that with the rapid weight loss that he generally does the first blood tests at about that time. I did a little research on line and it said hepatitis and obesity were causes for these enzyme levels to be high.
I went back and reviewed some prior blood tests and they were a little high but not what they were at three months after surgery. I have to think that the doc was right and it has to do with the rapid weight loss.

Take a deep breath! I too got the liver enzymes elevated at 3 months. I freaked out, knew I had hep c or something like that. Come to find out the rapid weight loss puts you in ketosis and impacts your liver, additionally when the surgeon moves things around inside (liver) when doing the surgery, touching the liver can cause it to release the enzymes.
Bottom line, relax until the 6 month checkup. They should go down, but can stay elevated for up to a year after surgery.
Hang in there!
It's so good to read your info, Cy. I had lap RNY on 9/20/06 and at 3 mos. my liver enzymes were elevated. I went to see a specialist and he saw me again last week and they are still elevated so he recommended a liver biopsy. I declined as this MD is in my hometown while I had my GBS in the Cities. My NP told me 3 mos. ago that she would suggest I see a liver specialist at the clinic where my surgeon practices out of before I decide to have a liver biopsy. So I plan to try to make an appt. soon.
Otherwise, I am feeling great. I'm down 85# (I started as a "lightweight" as I'm only 5 foot 1 1/2 inches tall) and wearing a size 8! I do have occassional mild discomfort on my right side and have felt slightly headachy and nauseated lately but have been off my usual food plan for a while due to vacations and stress. So I just figure it's a passing phase.
I'm praying my liver function tests will revert to normal again.

Hi Carolyn,
I am now 6 months post op and my liver values are fine. One thing that was different in my sx, was my surgeon Dr. Morton did a liver biopsy while he was in there doing the Lap Rouex in y GBS.. I think that is just common practice now. He said myliverwas 4 times the size it should be due to a fatty liver.. I finally went in to see myGP and put me on a standing order for a metabolic panel every 2 months, and in 2 months my values were normal!! He also said tha taking a milk thistle supplement helps detoxify the liver. My surgeon said he had not heard about the milk thistle thing , but my GP is also an endocrineologist so he knows his stuff. I had felt pretty ill for about a week when my liver enzymes were 10x's higher than the should be. So my advise to you is to go and see an endocrineologist. Also my GP said he would rather see a thiner me and an angry liver than a BIG me, which made total sence to me.. Anyway hope ths helps, and hopefully you don't have to do the Liver biopsy. good Luck -milissa :)
