I have had severe spasms of my ileosois & rectus femorus (hip & thigh) muscles. I'm having physical therapy 2x a week & do stretching exercises 5x a day. I've had little relief & sometimes can barely walk. My RNY was 5 months ago & I have lost 95lbs. I take Citracal & Children's chewables per my MD's orders. Can't exercise due to the pain now. Any advice or insights needed. Thanks - Darla

Darla, has your Dr. done any bloodwork to see how you're doing? low potassium, etc. and you're not dehydrated? I know which muscles you're talking about, and can only tell you what worked for me. During rapid weight loss, I was seeing a massage therapist and chiropractor fairly often from about 3 to 9 mo. post-op. From what they said, your pelvis is rotating back to where it should be, and sometimes the muscles don't like this. My problem areas were lower back, lower abs., and groin. This has pretty much stabilized now. Good luck, Doug

I too have severe leg spasms, but mine are of the lower legs. This has been going on for about 6-8 months. I have only had short periods of  time where they feel better. I have recently been put on plaquanil to help. This has given some relief. I had all the blood work done for low potassium, calcium, magnesium, etc. All of which were normal. I then went to a rheumatologist whom informed me of this side effect from having the RNY. I was shocked as no one had ever told me this and I had never read it anywhere. I had the dr. show me where this research was, and he then pulled it up on the computer under clinical research. I was taken aback. The research also stated that the labs will be normal the patient is not dehydrated, and the etiology for this is not yet known, but it is a side effect of bariatric surgery. Hope this helps.
