Dumping??
I am scheduled 9/13 and learned about dumping today during a pre-op class. I am wondering if my body's complete intolerance to sugar is indefinate? I have hardly any "sweet teeth" in my mouth so not that it's a huge deal, but I was wondering if your tummy adjusts at all to accept an occasional sweet? I was told a horror story about a woman who dipped her carrot in a bit of ranch and wa**** with dumping instantaneously! Is this permanent?
It is estimated that only 40% of post-ops experience some form of dumping. Some dump on sugars, some on fats and some on both. There are no guarantees that you will dump. Some folks find that they are fine with a food and then wham they dump on it. Some find that dumping lessens with time but some dump many years post-op. Everyone is a bit different. There are no solid rules for this.
My husband doesn't dump. I do. I haven't tried anything sugared but I've had things that have incidental sugar in it and I have dumped. Dumping for me is a bit different - I get belly pain. It just hurts - it can happen soon after eating or 2 hours after.
There is a big different between throwing up and dumping. Many post-ops confuse them and assume the first throw-up is dumping. If you eat too fast, eat too much, or don't chew something well enough - you may throw up. This is not dumping.

I dump on both high fatty foods and any foods that have over 12-15 grams of sugar. Everyone seems to have different symptoms of dumping varying from nausea, tachycardia, cold sweats, intestional cramps, stomach pains, loose stools to totally passing out!
My symptoms are tachycardia(high heart rate) and cold sweats most of the time but occasionally I have the loose stools. I monitor my sugars diligently but sometimes get lazy about the fat content.
I learned unforunately about dumping during my recovery from all my complications post revision.....the hospital dietician put my on a tube feed for diabetics that had a sugar content of 16 grams and I dumped every 2 hours for 3 days intil they figured out what other tube feed to put me on!
My dumping doesnt hit istantaneously...it ususally takes 15-45 mins for mine to hit if it is going to.
Good luck with your upcoming surgery!

Dawn
If dumping is a concern, there are other WLS procedures that don't put you at risk for it, such as the DS, Lap-band, Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy...I assume you've researched all the options before picking one? I didn't want to be at risk for dumping which was one of the many reasons I chose the lap-band.
