Hello, My sister, Terribelle is about a year out from her gastric bypass surgery. She has been having alot of pain and other complications. The drs. are trying to determine the cause (she had hernia surgery, but the pain is still there) and want her to have a test tomorrow to see if she has Blind Loop Syndrome. This will require her to begin fasting at 8pm tonight and then tomorrow morning drink 4 oz. of fluid that contains 50 g of sugar!!!!! She is scared to death! Her dr. believes that the risk of her having this problem is greater than the risk of the 50 grams of sugar. Does anyone have any information on this syndrome or have you ever had to have this test done?
Please respond asap!
God bless,
Sis of Terribelle
When a section of the intestine is blocked by blind loop syndrome, bile salts needed to digest fats become ineffective, resulting in fatty stools and poor absorption of fat and fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur because the extra bacteria which develop in this situation use up all of the vitamin.
Blind loop syndrome is a complication that occurs after many operations, including subtotal gastrectomy (surgical removal of part of the stomach), operations for extreme obesity, or as a complication of inflammatory bowel disease or scleroderma.
