Question for Catholic RNYs
I am 2 years post-op (in fact, my anniversary is 2-13!). I am in the process of converting to the Catholic faith. How do you handle holy days of obligation and fasting/abstinence? I have been eating about every 3 hours like many rny folks, but I don't want to violate the Church's fasting and abstinence position.
Kris
Fasting in this case is not going without food completely. Just no snacking. You are allowed a normal meal and two small meals.
Now, I am a Catholic who is also diabetic. Therefore, I am not held to these restrictions, but, I do abstain from snacking and do try to keep my meals smaller if I can.
I was my church's secretary at the time of my wls. The priest was very good at explaining how this works. If you are still unsure, then maybe you can ask your priest what he thinks.

Congratulations!!! I have been "officially" catholic for almost 3 years now. This will be my first Easter season post surgery. I've been told I fall into the category of the very young, and very old, can eat very small meals and no snacks or deserts. No problem here LOL!!!
Good luck to you, I'm sure whatever you do, God will know your heart and you will be fine! Carol
First of all I am not catholic. However I am a passionate christian and believe fasting is a spiritual act of worship, if it is called as church to fast together or to fast individually. Fasting is a different animal when you are intaking such a minimual amount of food to begin with. I would suggest substituting a small amount of protein shake instead of a meal if you feel like you want to abstain from the pleasure of food.
Remember also fasting without dedicating time to God in prayer is just going without food. I have attempted fasting during 12 hour work days and was a mess!!! There was no way for me to be in prayer and just going without food made me really foggy, nausaus and unable to think.
I truely believe that He looks at our heart and sees our desire to honor Him and to focus on Him during a time of fasting. Again, I am not catholic but I wanted to share my thoughts as a believer. I am called to fast also from time to time and have to struggle the same struggle. If you spent your meal time drinking a small amount of protein shake and really sacraficed time to dedicate to prayer, I think Our Father would be so thrilled!!! He wants relationship with us over everything else. God bless your heart, Please accept this as an opinion, I am not attemting to change your beliefs. Love J.Marie
