Flashback Friday Devotion #17 [Clay in the Potter's Hands]
On Monday, we'll begin looking at the final 2 pieces of the Armor of God. Frankly, I don't know if we'll take 2 or 20 days to do so. We'll see how the Lord leads.
I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend, and for all you mothers out there, Happy Mother's Day. :)
Today's devotion is from my personal journal dated April 25, 2007.
Flashback Friday Devotion #17 [Clay in the Potter's Hands]
This morning I awoke at 3:30, so I had my Quiet Time (Bible reading and prayer). As I got quiet before the Lord, I asked Him to show me what He wanted to give to me today. The song Have Thine Own Way came to me. I began to sing, "Have thine own way, Lord. Have thine own way. Thou art the Potter; I am the clay. Mold me and make me after thy will, while I am waiting, yielded and still."
I knew that "clay in the Potter's hand" was the topic for today. Through my concordance, I found Jeremiah 18:3-4, 6 which says, "I went down to the potter's house, and behold, he was working at the wheel. And the vessel that he was making from clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he made it over, reworking it into another vessel as it seemed good to the potter to make it... 'Can I not do with you as this potter does?' says the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are you in My hand..."
One would think that "spoiled" clay is thrown out, but it isn't--not in The Potter's (God's) hands. A bit more water is added, and the clay is pounded down, softened, and reworked. It was a moment when I could envision the process. I could see that the clay is me.
Oh, Father, are You sure? Are You absolutely sure that You can, that You will take this old lump of clay that is me and rework me into a vessel that is beautiful, no longer marred or spoiled, and useful to You? I heard His answer, "If it were not so, I would have told you."
Today, contemplate your vessel (spirit, mind, and body). Are you soft and malleable, so God can mold you, or have you allowed the cares of this world to harden you? Allow The Potter to do His work in you, and, very soon, your outside will mirror your inside.
Blessings,
Mary

One of my great awakenings came several years ago as I took a pottery class with my sister. I am not particularly blessed with any artistic talent, and found myself over and over having to restart my projects. For any pot to be successful, it must be tightly centered on the wheel. If you lose focus for even a second, or if you loosen your grip at the wrong moment, you pot will be spoiled.
How often the phrase "as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand" went through my mind as I struggled in that class. I began to realize how intently focused the Lord is on our life and how he never loses his grip. I also saw how easy it is for him to "start us over" and rebuild us from lumps of clay to beautiful vessels. The clay does need to be soft and malleable, but it doesn't do the work, the potter does! Without the potter, it can never be a thing of great beauty.
Thank you for the reminder of this great lesson.
