The Shack
Hi, Iris.
I've read The Shack. As a former English teacher, I could appreciate the writing. As a believer, I could also appreciate the fact that God is often misunderstood by the world. However, portraying God as a woman was just strange for me. It felt disrespectful, and I kept envisioning Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire. :)
Blessings,
Mary

The book is all the buzz around my area and church. I just started reading it, my granddaughter got it for my birthday several months ago and it got set aside in my pile of books to read . I'm only a few chapters in and I gotta say so far I'm not getting it but maybe it'll get clearer as I read on. I kinda feel like Mary that it so far disrespects the holiness and awesomeness of God, but we'll see where it takes me. Maybe I'm just old school and old fashioned.
My best friend and mentor suggested I read it.
Thanks for the reminder.

I loved the Shack. I'm typically one that will avoid reading what everyone else is reading, but this one just fell into my lap. I had a hard time with the God being portrayed as a woman, at first...but the more I read it, I realized...or I perceived...that wasn't really what the author's intentions were. I think it was more he was showing an aspect of God that we don't think about very often. We think of God as our Father and He is absolutely that...but women was also crafted in His image through man. Nurturing is an characteristic attributed to the female, but woman only nurture because it comes from God.
I'm not speaking for the author...only God knows His heart...but I just think we sometimes put God's image into box...as being the stern hand, the one that is to be feared, obeyed, revered. But God is also our soft place to fall...our place to run to when the world has kicked us around. All of the unconditional love and comfort that we get (or should get) from our earthly mothers, quite simply pales in comparrison to that which we get from our loving God. I think about the children in this world who are born to less-than-ideal mothers and I just want to pick them up and carry them to God's arms.
I believe that God is all things to all people and He's known to us as a "man", because our finite minds cannot grasp Him in all of His glory and all that He is.
Anyway, that was what I took away from the book. 2¢
