Hi, Everyone.
I sure hope I don't lose any friends over this devotion. Just kidding--well, maybe. :)

Relational Devotion #28 [my burning question]

John 20:11-16 [NIV]
"Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
They asked her, 'Woman, why are you crying?'
'They have taken my Lord away,' she said, 'and I don't know where they have put Him.' At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
'Woman,' He said, 'why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?'
Thinking He was the gardener, she said, 'Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.'
Jesus said to her, 'Mary.'
She turned toward Him and cried out in Aramaic, 'Rabboni!' (which means Teacher)."

Several years ago, I was reading through the Book of John, one chapter per day, and it was quite meaningful to me to read the chapters about the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, since it was very close to Easter Sunday. It amazes me that I can read Scripture over and over and, still, get something "new" from it. That's what happened with today's verses, and, if you will allow me to, I'd like to tell you the story.
As I was reading through John chapter 20, reading about Mary Magdalene's weeping at the empty tomb, and her conversation with the two angels (which, by the way, she doesn't seem at all surprised to see and hear talking), something new about this old, familiar story struck me.
Just as Mary finishes telling the angels the reason why she's crying, that "they have taken my Lord away, and I don't know where they have put Him," she turns around and sees Jesus standing there, although she does not realize it is Jesus. He begins to speak to her, and Mary thinks He is the gardener.
It hit me--Mary turned around. Mary had been facing the tomb, bent over, looking into the tomb, talking with the two angels who were inside the tomb, so what would cause her to turn around? Jesus had not spoken yet, and she had not seen Him. What made Mary turn around?
My mind could not get past that point, so I prayed about it. I asked God to give me wisdom to understand what is not even specified in these verses (or in the other Gospel accounts). Nothing came to me, so I just asked the Lord to help me understand, in His own timing, which was hard for me to do, since I'm basically an impatient person.
When I went to bed that night, I was still pondering this passage, wondering what made Mary turn, to look away from the tomb. With a shrug, I finally decided I'd better get some sleep. Little did I know, I was about to dream an amazing dream, which would answer my burning question.
Note:  Since this is getting long, I'll continue this devotion tomorrow, at which time I'll write about my dream and, believe it or not, tie it into weight loss.
Blessings,
Mary

AAAGGGHHH Mary you're worse than my soap opera! Now I'll be wondering all day what the end of the story is. Well, I'll for sure tune in tomorrow to see what the ending is. God bless and love your daily devotions even if I don't often respond.

LOL! That was mean of me, wasn't it. I used to do that to my high school English students, and they'd react the same way! LOL
Love to hear from you, whenever that is. :)
Blessings,
Mary
