Relational Devotion #21 [LOVE]
Hi, Everyone.
It was nice to "meet" some new faces yesterday, via PM. How that blesses me! I love how, even though we've never met in person nor heard each other's voice, we have an instant connection and that's because we know Jesus.
Just a reminder that this will be a short "week" for the daily devotion. I'll be with family Thursday and Friday. When we share what we are thankful for, you'll be on my list!
John 15:12-13
"[Jesus said,] 'This is My commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends.'"
What do we really know of love? If we say we love God yet hate our brother [any other human], then we are liars, for God is love. God hates no one. God loved us so much that He gave His Son, Jesus Christ, as the perfect sacrifice, to pay for all sins, past, present, and future. Jesus laid down His life willingly, out of love, and, as our example, He tells us to do the same.
We are not the Savior, but we can love others as He has loved us. Love goes beyond mere words. Sometimes it is spoken in silence, when we do not condemn someone who comes to us looking for help. Love does not just tell them what the problems are. It helps carry the weight of their burdens.
What this has to do with weight loss: It is important for the person burdened with weight and food issues to be a part of a support network, like OH.com. When we help others on their journey, which is a part of laying down one's life for one's friends, we help ourselves, as well. We must help carry our friends until they are able to take steps toward health and wholeness on their own, and then they, in turn, will help others. It is a beautiful network of love in action.
Today, lay down your life for a friend. Put someone else ahead of yourself, and you will fulfill Jesus' commandment. Listen to Steven Curtis Chapman sing "No Greater Love," and watch a short video about a real-life story of laying down one's life for the sake of the Gospel. If you have never heard this story, I would encourage you to read Through Gates of Splendor, Elisabeth Elliot's book.
