Prayer Request for my Son

Please pray for my son, Sean, and his roommate, Seth.  I was chatting with Sean today and he asked me some questions about having his roommate committed to a hospital.  I am a Licensed Social Worker and work part time in a psychiatric hospital.  It seems that Seth has been psychotic for sometime, with paranoid delusions.  He refuses to see a doctor to get help, so my son was asking me what to do.  I recommended he take Seth to an ER to be evaluated, and to see if the docs there could convince him to sign himself into a hospital.  Sean does not know what he is going to do at this point.  Due to the fact that Seth has not threatened self-harm or to harm anyone else, legally he cannot be committed to a hospital.

Please pray for Sean to have wisdom and for Seth to become willing to seek psychiatric help.

Thanks,
Trish

What a difficult position for Sean, will add him to my prayer list. It's just so sad that people don't have the right to help those who need it because someone years ago decided it interefers with their personal rights. These poor people need help but you can't get it for them.

I know what you mean.  I have an aunt that had terrible schizophrenia, and she refused to take her meds for years, and when she was off her meds, my mother would try to visit her and get her help, and she was so mean to my mother during that time.  It broke my mother's heart terribly, as she is my Mom's only sister.  Finally, she got help and now she is in a nursing home with dementia, which is common for schizophrenics when they get older.

Unfortunately, in the case of paranoid schizophrenia, the delusions create a distrust of the very people who can help the person suffering.

It is a no win situation.  My son and Seth are both about 26 years old.  Sean has had experience dealing with roommates and friends who suffer mental illness, so this is nothing new.  I often tell him he should go to med school to become a psychiatrist.  He has a heart for people who suffer, and a brain that is beyond smart.

Thanks for praying.

Hi, Trish.
I will be praying for Sean and Seth. I'm asking God to intervene in this situation. My heart just squeezes for people with mental illness. I had an alternate personality for years. It was a way to deal with the pain of my past. It was strange, putting all the pieces together, but then we dealt with it, and light and life just began to burst through! If only Seth could be made to understand that life can be so much better, with help.
I agree with you. It sounds like Sean has a calling. :)
Blessings,
Mary

Thanks, Mary.
If Sean does have a calling, he gets it from me.  His father wanted nothing to do with the mental health system after his father committed suicide, yet I come from a family with serious mental health issues, myself included.  I was thrilled when I was able to study mental illness and psychology in college and graduate school.  When I work at the hospital, I feel that is what God called me to do.

Thanks for praying.

Hugs,
Trish

There is nothing like being involved in a career that feels like just the right "fit" for you. There is a lot to be said for being able to be empathetic with people, because you've been where they are, when you can say, "I've been through this, and you CAN get better." It means so much to them. Plus, you have the added benefit of being a child of God, so you know that He can "bind up [their] wounds." Even if you can't say much about that to the person, your touch is healing and your prayers are powerful. It's wonderful. :)
Blessings,
Mary

Trish,  WOW!  What a heavy burden for Sean to have to bear.  Praying that God give him the wisdom he needs.  What about Seth's parents?  Can Sean call them to maybe get them to step in to help?

Prayers going up.  God bless you and love ya!

Thanks for praying, Randall.
I mentioned Seth's Mom to Sean yesterday, and he said that she does not think Seth has a serious problem.  Denial.  I understand that, as I have seen it in a lot of family members when a young person first develops a mental illness.

I hope to chat with Sean today and learn if there is any progress.
