Devotion #20
Hi, Everyone.
Today's devotion is from my personal journal dated April 28, 2007. It is shorter than yesterday's, so I've included a video song and story at the end. I hope you'll take 7 min. 11 sec. to watch it.
Today I was thinking more about the children of Israel and their time of bondage in Egypt. Exodus 3:7-8 tells me that God "[saw] the affliction of [His] people...[gave] heed to their cry...[was] aware of their sufferings...[came] down to deliver them...and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land." It took 400 years, from start to finish, if I remember correctly.
I kept reading, and when I came to Exodus 12:11, I saw something "new." The New Living Translation says, "These are your instructions for eating this meal: Be fully dressed, wear your sandals, and carry your walking stick in your hand. Eat the meal with urgency, for this is the LORD's Passover."
The children of Israel were to be ready to go, at a moment's notice. I knew that, but the Lord just gave me a personal revelation, the moment I read that verse! Since Jesus Christ is our "Passover Lamb" (I Corinthians 5:7), as soon as I eat the Lamb, I will leave Egypt. When I feed on Jesus, my Passover Lamb, I leave Egypt, my enslavement to overeating.
I feed on the Lamb, when I feast on Him and the Word of God. When I eat with thanksgiving and with discipline, I honor the Lord with my body. To be able to do that, I must "feed" on Jesus, through thinking on, meditating on, and acting on the Word.
Before, I tried to leave slavery without being full of Christ. Now I get it! Eat and leave, eat and live! I feel like I've taken my first steps out of Egypt! My body does not look different yet, but I know, in time, it will. How do I know? Because this is all by the mercy of God and for the glory of God.
Today, consider any "Egypt areas" in your life. What steps do you need to take, to leave your Egypt? For those of you who have successfully exited your Egypt, know that Egypt is never far away. In fact, it's only one step backward, and it's easy to go there, for while it's a land full of pain, it is familiar.
I feel a little like the radio guy Paul Harvey, who says, "Now you know the rest of the story." Here is a YouTube video of Michael English singing "Lord, Feed Your Children." The Gaither Homecoming family of singers invited Michael to come, to sing that song. They knew he had been away from the Lord, and they were praying and hoping that he would be drawn back while singing the song. You can tell by Michael's body language and his tentative voice that he's uncomfortable. You can also see the Homecoming family watching and listening. I encourage you to watch all 7 minutes 11 seconds, to see what happens. http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=xM29BFBfRbs&feature=related
I just thought it was very sweet and wanted to share it with all my "family."
I'll post the next devotional on Monday, Lord willing. Have a wonderful and safe Labor Day weekend.
Blessings,
Mary
