Having Issues and need advice
Hello to everyone,
My problem has been happening for about a year and a half but Monday it hit a new level.
I get this really weird feeling in my body and when I get it I know that I need to eat something. Well I got that same weird feeling on Monday following my husbands Dr's appt. We were standing at the elevator and I told him I felt weird and that's the last thing I remember, the next thing I remember I was in the ER. It has never happened to me to that extent and it freaked my husband and myself out. The DR there told me that it was low blood sugar, by the time I got there and they did a test on it my sugar was 69 and I was starting to come around. They told me that was low. I went in to see my PCP today and talked to him about it and he wants to do a 3 hour glucos testing on me. I'm waiting to hear back from my surgeon to see what he says.
I guess what I'm wondering is, has anyone else experienced anything like this? It just makes me so frustrated that I did this surgery to get healthy and I"m healthier than I've ever been and this is happening to me. Uggggg. I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone.
Thanks,
Loni
Loni,
Unfortunately this is pretty common with WLS. I too have had this problem. Mine was mainly at night and it depended on what I ate for supper. It would be a good idea to keep something with you in your purse so that if you get that feeling again, you can eat something. The main thing is to get your blood sugar back up but then (from what I understand) you need protein afterwards to keep it up. I'm not a medical professional but maybe someone who is will post. This is just my own personal experience. I would always eat peanut butter crackers or a peanut butter sandwich and that would help. I haven't had that problem in quite a while now. I think it is mainly because I'm trying to be more conscious of what I eat. Any kind of carb would do that to me.

Yes, I had it when I was hypoglycemic. The way to prevent it is to make sure you eat no more than 4 hours apart and that you have a healthy balanced meal each time, with protein and good carbohydrates, not refined carbs or sugar. Low blood sugar is either a symptom of an unhealthy pancreas, or just not enough carbohydrates in your diet. I always keep a protein bar or Goldfish crackers with me to snack on, or something like that.
Be sure to consult your surgeon about the 3 hour glucose tolerance test. If you had RNY, you will probably dump big time drinking the liquid they give you.
Let us know how you make out.
Hugs,
Trish
