Doing the right thing with a WRONG ATTITUDE equals bad results. Wednesday 12/5/2007 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you give a tenth of your mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected and omitted the weightier (more important) matters of the Law-right and justice and mercy and fidelity. These you ought [particularly] to have done, without neglecting the others. MATTHEW 23:23 TITHING WAS BUT one of a long list of "right things" the Pharisees did that Jesus pointed out as coming out of hearts of hypocrisy and thus yielding bad results. The fact that they were detailed in their tithing down to the herbs in their gardens was not a reflection of their love for God. They did it to impress others around them. This practice only fueled their pride, hypocrisy, and self-righteousness. Jesus did not say they should stop tithing but He let them know they were missing the point completely. What value was the tithing of herbs compared to "right and justice and mercy and fidelity"? Jesus' word to you is that to perform certain acts that look righteous while cheating your neighbor or refusing mercy to others is to deceive yourself. It is to walk with the same spiritual blindness of the scribes and Pharisees. Beware of the blindness that accompanies doing "right things" with a wrong heart. What a great devotional today for self-examination! Shannon
