What is a Floodgate?
" . . . and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it." (Malachi 3:10)
A physical floodgate is an adjustable gate that controls water flow in reservoirs, rivers and streams. A floodgate does three things. It shuts out, it admits, and it releases the flowing agent. Malachi was referring to a spiritual floodgate that does all three of these things when he said, "see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it." Unfortunately, most of us reduce the above scripture to only tithing. Malachi 3:10 is more than an overused tithing scripture. While Malachi uses tithing as an example, the opening of the floodgates of heaven surely does apply to more than giving and receiving money.
This principle applies not only to our possessions but also to our entire lives. God wants us to completely open ourselves to Him; physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. When we completely open ourselves to Him and give Him our hearts in obedience, love and fellowship, then He will not gently or slowly open the floodgates. Instead He will throw open the floodgates so that what had been blocked in our lives will flow through with a mighty force. No, dollar bills will not flow through the floodgates. Neither will mutual funds or anything material. Spiritual things we thought were unattainable will be released: love, joy, peace, contentment, etc.
Notice in the above scripture, the "s" on floodgate, the absence of an "s" on blessing, and the singular pronoun "it." When you are obedient, God will throw open the FLOODGATES, and so much BLESSING will flow that you will not have room enough for IT. God wants to give us one good blessing that floodgates need to be opened to let it through.
If you are not experiencing "God's Floodgates Blessing" today, perhaps your floodgates are shut up. In order for God to throw open your floodgates, rid yourself of any debris that is standing in the way.
