What's the Difference: Want, Wish, Desire?
What's the Difference: Want, Wish, Desire?
Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)
Have you ever wanted something? Have you ever wished for something? Have you ever desired something? Is there a difference between a want, a wish and a desire? Sure, there is!
A WANT is something that is not needed. It is something you can do without. It is something that will not impact your life whether you have it or not. You are fine with or without it. Having whipped cream on top of ice cream is a want, but you can still enjoy the ice cream with or without the whipped cream.
A WISH implies a general or a temporarily longing for something that is usually unattainable. For example, you may wi**** would stop raining so you can enjoy the picnic. You can't make it stop raining. And it will stop eventually, but for the time being you have to endure it. There is nothing wrong with wishing, but usually you have no control over what you wish for.
A DESIRE is a conscious impulse toward something. It is an urge to obtain something because you think it will bring satisfaction and/or pleasure. A desire is something you hope for. Desire usually is accompanied by feelings and often implies strong intention or aim. For example, one might desire a changed life. A desire is attainable and you usually get what you desire when you desire it with your whole heart and when it lines up with the word of God.
Some things we don't get because we either want or wish for them, but we don't desire them. In my opinion, it would be wise to desire something instead of wanting and wishing for it. DESIRE is the strongest and most effective of the three. If you delight yourself in the Lord, He will give you the desires of your heart, but not necessarily your wants and your wishes!

I liked this study. Like many on this board I wanted to lose weight, but it took my desire to be in service to God to move me toward WLS. I had found that my weight and embaressment about my weight was keeping me back from being a servant. My energy level was so low and my frustrations at myself fueled the eating demon within. When I finally gave it all over to God and asked him to take the food out of my life I found release. He has given me my desire of my heart - to be closer to him - and I count this site as one of the ways he has fulfilled that desire. So here's a big Thank You to all of you who help me obtain my desires.
