It's Greek to Me!"
It's Greek to Me!"
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever. (John 14:16)
How many times have you heard or even said, "It's Greek to Me"? While the original language of the Old Testament is Hebrew, the original language of the New Testament is Greek. You can understand the Bible better If you knew the original languages. Since that is not possible for everyone, let me introduce you to the Greek word: sunantilambanotai. (And everybody's spell checker is going wild right now).
To understand a Greek word is to do the same thing with it that you do with English words. You divide it into sections. Sunantilambanotai is made up of three words: "sun" meaning "along with, together"; "anti" meaning "on the opposite side"; and "lambano" meaning "to take hold of." When you put these three smaller words together, "sunantilambanotai" means "to take hold of together and be along with over on the other side." In other words, before leaving this earth, Jesus promised that He would ask the Father to send us a helper, someone who would take hold of us as we walk together while that helper is on the other side protecting us from danger. Since the ending of this Greek word is in the present tense, it simply means that the Holy Spirit is always there doing continuous action. He is always available to us to take hold on the other side of our crippling infirmity, our damaged emotions, and our painful situations.
It is interesting to note that this particular verb found in John 14:16 is a promise made to us. It is found only in one other place in the New Testament. When Martha was complaining about Mary not helping her, she said to Jesus, "Tell Mary to come in here and sunantilambano me! Tell her to come in here and do her share. Tell her to get on the other side of me and help." (Luke 10:40)
The word might be Greek to you, but understand the word picture of how the Holy Spirit is always alongside us, helping us, taking hold of us on the other side.
