Mom's Spiritual Need

Last night I had a conversation with my Mom that disturbed me, but also gave me hope. It is a long story, and I will try to condense it. Mom's salvation status is questionable to me. My cousin, Kim, is married to a drug addicted abuser, and her kids are a mess because of their upbringing. Kim's husband has accepted the Lord as savior and is talking about being born again. Mom has repeatedly said that if Bill (Kim's husband) is going to heaven, she doesn't want to go there. She then asked me about judgement days in the Bible, and if someone commits murder today, and gets saved tomorrow, it's not right that they get to go to heaven. (We have had similar conversations in the past, and I have gotten frustrated over them.) Well, the Lord gave me a nudge and I told Mom that if she believed that, then Paul the Apostle and King David must not be in heaven, because they were both murderers. I also mentioned the thief on the cross. Mom did not know much about the Apostle Paul, so I told her about how he persecuted the Christians in the early church, making sure they were killed. I then reminded her about David's affair with Bathsheba and how he had Urriah killed, and yet God called David the "Apple of His eye." Mom got really silent, and then said, "Well, I have evil thoughts." I said, "Welcome to the human race, we all do. That is why we need a Savior, because none of us are good enough for heaven." Please pray for my Mom. She is 80 years old, and has been agitated about spiritual things since my brother's funeral in October. Thanks, Trish

Trish - I'll pray for your Mom. I can see where your brother's death could derail her and then for "bad people" to be forgiven by the Lord - well, sometimes it's hard to fathom and accept. The measure of sin - all sin is sin and none is "worse" than another - and that's hard for me to understand at times too. I'm so glad that you spoke up to her and talked to her. God intentionally gave us people like Paul and David in the bible to help us to grasp His great grace. Good for you for pursuing it with her. As we've been told - it's our job to Love, and God's job to Judge. Take care. Let us know how she's doing... Hugs - Carolyn

Trish, your answers to your mom are good. Let me tell you a little bit about my mom. At age 90 we had to put her into a medical facility because of her failing physical health....not her mental health. She had always been a Christian and feeling a strong purpose in life to always share the gospel. She was in a semi-private room with Archie...a 98 year old lady who had been widowed as a young woman and had no children. She was beligerant...she would yell in the night the most disgusting, cursing words and I begged my mom to let me pursue a change. Even the facility staff wanted to get my mother to change rooms. She would always tell me, "I'm here for a reason, Ruthanna." Mother would pray and read her Bible and devotional and always asked Archie to join her. Archie continued her avoidance at first, but Over the next months Archie seemed to soften and listen to my mother. My mother died July 2, 2000 but not before knowing that Archie had accepted Jesus as her Savior....I'm sure they will meet again in Heaven. I share this to simply encourage you and others who might be reading this....God only asks us to share and plant the seed and to be faithful in doing so..... We have a purpose as Christians and we can never retire from that mission. God bless you ..... you are in my prayers.

You did an excellent job of explaining from examples from the bible. I will pray that God will open her heart. Hugs, Sandyd
