Topic: RE: Colon Cancer / Chemo / Bypass Surgery
Hello David,  I am sorry that no one posted a reply sooner...I just found this forum by accident. It doesn't look like it is very active. I hope that is because they are all healthy and have started a "New " normal life after cancer. Hope this note finds you well. I had RNY in January 2005 and was treated for ovarian cancer in 2007. I did not have any problems with any of my chemo meds. The steroid pills that I had to take the night before my treatments where small. I shouted from the roof tops that I had had gastric bypass and I double checked all my medicines with my GB surgeon.  My chemo therapy regimen was taxol and carboplatin. I did have some other drugs in there as well but I can't remember there names. My red blood count was low so I was given a shot of Aranesp to boost my count.  I had 6 sessions of chemo and my last treatment was October 2007. What chemo drugs will they be giving you? How many treatments will you have?  I am glad they fast tracked you and I wish you well. My thing is make sure you tell everyone and I do mean everyone that you have had gastric bypass surgery.  There are so many different drugs out there that they can use that are gastric bypass friendly. Keep posting and let us know how your treatments are going. Linda Barrett

Topic: RE: Tamoxifin and Gastric bypass surgery

I don't know about Tamoxifin, but I'm going on to an aromatose inhibiter following radiation and I was told that WLS was still OK after some healing time. I have been told that Tamoxifin is not a good choice since I still have my uterus.

Can I still have gastric bypass surgery and take Tamoxifin? I have atypical ductal hyperplasia found in microcalcifications that were biopsied through stereotactic needle biopsy. i am having a surgical biopsy the 13th of April. The radiologist suggested taking the Tamoxifin as a precaution even though I do not have cancer. My wls will be scheduled soon and I am worried they will say you can't have it. Help?? Please need PRAYERS! labugmom

Hi Friends, I thought my chronic constipation was from my bypass surgery, because it started around the same time.  It wasn't.  Last Friday I discovered I have colon cancer and hopped on the first plane to the US to have 1/2 of my colon removed along with the tumor which was causing the problem. I got out of the hospital today.  I was able to get a fast track surgery and from the time I found about it till my surgery was only 3 days, then 8 days in hospital. Luckily they were able to do the surgery without me having a colostomy bag. Now I am faced with chemotherapy. What do we know about having chemotherapy with a gastric bypass. Do we have a history on that? I couldn't find a way to search the archives.

Topic: RE: 18 month Post OP and DX with Breast Cancer

Hi Diana, I am so sorry that you have breast cancer.  I had been a survivor for 7 years. It metastisized to my bone and rt lung.  I've been on weekly chemo for 17 months now and the tumors haven't changed.  Thank the Lord.  Breast cancer is very treatable and since yours was found so early you should do great. Did you know that it is a law that not only is reconstruction will be covered, BUT ALSO that the other breast be made similar in size, placement etc.  This is in an attempt to make the woman feel as "normal" as possible.  There is a procedure called Tram Flap where the surgeon takes some belly "tissue" and tunnels it up to the site.  So you get a tummy tuck as well as a lift on the unaffected side, and of course reconstruction at the cancer site!!! Great huh!  The breast made from your own tissue looks and feels like the real thing.  I would google Tram Flap and ask your surgeon about it. God Bless, Paula

Hi Joni,   I'm from Jackson, Mo.  Is there any Dr's in Cape that does the lap-band surgery? Congrats to you for your weight loss and your remission! doo

It's a shocking diagnosis I know. As Laura said- I was getting pre-op tests and got the diagnosis too. We are both very lucky that the cancer was caught early.  I'm going to the breast surgeon this Friday. I guess we'll be climbing the hurdle at close to the same time. I'll be keeping good thoughts for you! Julia

Hi Diana. My mom and I were getting our pre-op tests done when we found out that she had breast cancer. She is also in the very early stages. We also feel that wls has saved her, even though she hasn't gotten it yet. I hope everything goes well for you, and good luck with your breast lift and your tummy tuck!

Topic: RE: Breast Cancer Survivor, Mastectomy Options?
I lost 120 lbs and still am a DD. I am having a double mastectomy because I have BC in left breast and Strong Family History even though I tested negative for the BRCA gene. This time I am going for a Full C no more DD. Bras are cheaper  in C , much more selection and you can get all those cute ones. Diana

Well on February 5 I went for my first mammogram since WLS and the PRe Op Mammogram. I was about six months late for my annual Mammogram. On February 9 it was confirmed I had Breast Cancer. All I can say is they found it and it is in a very early stage. I feel having WLS has again saved my life. Now I am going to get over this hurdle with the surgery and reconstruction for Breast cancer. You know after I lost so much weight I wanted to have my breasts lifted but the insurance would not pay for it. Now I will get the breast done and in a couple years I will pay for a tummy tuck. Diana
