They were able to use the muscle from my lower abdomen for both breasts, so they are symmetrical.  I agree with you.  We do deserve this.  How's it going with loss for you?  I am on my second fill and am down 23 lbs since I started the preop diet.  Good luck!  Kim

Hi Kim I thought thats what it meant, I am confused about one thing though, If you had Tram flap, what did they do to reconstruct the other side? I do have a fat pouch sorta beneath the breast that they did the tram flap on, Ive thought many times that I would like to have liposuction there. but  Im sure they wouldnt do it. Good luck to you also, we deserve this Pam

I am so happy for you.....   Bilateral means both breasts,  I decided to have both removed so I didn't have to worry about the other breast and for both breast to be the same.  I am like you.  I wouldn't do the tram flap again, I would do implants.  Do you have a roll in your upper abdomen from the tram flap surgery?  I hope mine goes away with wait loss.  Good luck to you.    =Kim

Hi Kilgram, congrats with your banding and with your sucess with fighting cancer, I ended up having the lapband surgery done on  Mar 24th, everything has gone well, hejust had to be a little creative in where he placed the port. Its right in the center of my abdomen and  and about half way between my belly button and my bra. The only problem as far as the cancer surgery goes it that my reconstructed breast is getting quite a bit smaller than the other one. Oh well I guess its a give and take thing. What does bi lateral mean? Pam

I am a 9 yr survivor of breast cancer.  I had ductal carcinoma insitu.  I had a bilateral mastectomy with a tram flap reconstruction.  I just had Lapband surgery  4/25 and they had no problems.  I have done fine.   Good Luck!

I had breast cancer in 2002 and Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2004 ..... My oncologist was on board, until he was asked to give me the OK LOL... I had been trying for two years and talked to him before starting the process.

He said he lost a patient who had the Gastric By-pass and was not able to handle chemotherapy treatment. This is why I am now pursuing the band..... my understanding is that the weight loss is not as rapid and malnutrition is not as much of a concern. He says I have a 10-20% chance of recurrence.... but I am also experience high blood pressure, joint pains, high cholesterol and let's not forget the toll on my heart from previous chemo treatments.

I am considering pursuing a second opinion..... I just don't want to feel as though I am disrespecting my Oncologist by doing this. I really need this help to lose weight....

Butterfly, I am so sorry about your situation.  Do you mind if I ask what kind of cancer you went through?  I have been in remission for just over three years and all of my oncologist supported my decision for WLS.  Because I am not at the five year mark for being cancer free I was very surprised (but very happy!) that my insurance approved the surgery.  Speaking from experience I know the bond that you no doubt have with your oncologist but perhaps a second opinion may be in order.  Not to say I doubt your primary oncologist but if he sees the view point of a fellow oncologist maybe he will re-evalutate your situatation and give you the okay.  I went through colo-rectal cancer in July, 2003 and then cancer in my pelvic area, several lymph nodes and vaginal cancer in July, 2004.   Best of luck and keep us informed.... you will be in my thoughts and wishing you the very best! I went through every test/appt and my oncologist will not sign off on my surgery.  Eventhough I discussed this with him years ago. He is concerned I may have a recurrence after losing alot of weight and will have a hard time with cancer treatment.  I then asked to be considered for the LapBand.  All I need is his ok... and I can't get it.....

Anyone can have the surgery and be diagnosed afterwards.... He says I have a 10-20% chance of recurrence .....

I am so disappointed.....

Hi Engel, This happened to me too- breast cancer in the right breast pre-WLS. I had to put off the WLS for 6 months to get surgery and radiation, but then I had the WLS. I'm down 90 pounds since December. The cancer was just a blip, but it couldn't be ignored. Julia
