Topic: RE: cancer after weight loss...please read and advice
Hi, I just finished my treatments (Chemo. and Rads.) about 6 weeks ago for breast cancer. During the Chemo., they gave me meds to help ease the nausea, which contained steroids. This can  (and did in my case) cause weight gain - BUT - I have now lost the gained weight, and have lost 6 lbs. more to boot. Just stay on the program.
A wonderful aspect of having RNY, and being on the eating program, is that my Dr. said that this is the diet that they try to get EVERYONE to go on (high protein, low carbs.) to aid in their healing. But, since weight-loss patients are already on this diet, it is no transition for us. Our bodies are in prime condition to heal. So, it is easier for us to get through the ordeal.
My weight pre-RNY (Nov. 12, 2003) was 309. When I started my cancer treatments in March, 2008, it was 168, and now, it is 134 (with the 6 lbs. loss this last month) at 5'5". A good hint: nutrition drinks REALLY are good for getting the body replenished (even when you don't feel like eating, drink a protein drink).
Just try to keep up with your protein and water, and you will do fine.

Thanks for your note and positive prayers!

I did have to wait until I was 5 years out from my ovarian cancer to get my approval for WLS.  My surgeon took me a few months early, but only with permission from my oncologist.

Good luck on your journey and congratulations on being a survivor!!

Hey, Reenie.  That's got to be tough, diagnosed again.

I'm glad to hear that you're comfortable with the treatment.  I too have heard that thyroid cancer is highly curable.

I'm also glad to hear that you were able to get WLS as a cancer survivor. I'm 3 years 2 month out from breast cancer, and some people have said that approval for surgery was hard for them to get as survivors.

I thank God for your good prognosis, and I pray right now that He will manifest healing in your body once again.

Please keep us posted.

Topic: RE: IBC=Inflammatory Breast Cancer
I had Inflamatory breast cancer - Invasive Ductal Carcinoma - stage 3.  I had a mastectomy, cheom and radiation and 22 lymph nodes removed.  Many good doctor will recognize the symptoms.  My doctor took one look and knew it was cancer.   I'm now a one+ year survivor and just had WLS.   Down 44 lbs since December 4th.   Life is good!

Topic: RE: Brother has Pancreatic Cancer
Angel, I wish I could give you good news but I can't. My husband died November 17th from throat cancer. He was dianosed the first time just after I had my WLS and went thru 3 bouts of it. He had radiation the 1st time. Radiation and chemo the 2nd time taking the risk of his coroid artery busting and him dying instantly. He was dianosed in May with the 3rd bout. They tried chemo but he got a massive infection . All treatment was stopped and he was put into Hospice Care in June.  He weighed 118 lbs at the time from 165lbs. He was 57. He did well for about 2 months . Then he had lots of complications and became bedridden. He would eat for days and totally stop eating. He had trouble swallowing too. We gave him alot of milk shakes with added protein powder. I had a hard time dealing with this statement but all I kept hearing was : "He is not dying because he is not eating, he is not eating because he is dying". Feeding them can also make matters worse for them. I know it is hard for us to understand. I do know know what my husband weighed when he died but I can tell you he was nothing but skin and bones. I took a medical leave of absence from work to care for him. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do in my life. I would do it over in a minute. My advice to you would to be to spend all the quality time you can with him and take care of yourself too. This will be a very hard time in your life. Prayer will help. Hospice is a very good organization. I want to take early retirement from my job  next year and go to work for them. See you lighter. Joanne

Topic: RE: Thyroid Cancer??
Nanci, I had radiated iodine treatment years ago for a thyroid condition that was not cancer. I lost medical insurance and didn't get needed bloodwork . The results was it over ate my thyroid and I am now on 100% replacement meds. Please Please get all bloodwork done. I don't really know for sure but I think vomiting and nausea is normal with cancer treatment. Please call your Dr. and check. My husband just passed away November 17th from 3 bouts with throat cancer. He was dianosed just after I had my WLS, April 5,2005.  Sorry this is off the subject but I had to share. See you lighter. Thanks Edie!!

I came home from my 2nd surgery today.  I am much calmer about the diagnosis now that I know the treatment and have read a lot about how curable thyroid cancer is.

I just wonder how much my obesity had to do with both of these battles with cancer.

Reenie,

I'm so sorry to hear about your most recent diagnosis.  Cancer sucks.

You'll be in my prayers.

By the way I'm 4 years 8 months out from breast cancer.

Good luck,

Edie

Topic: RE: Question for those with breast reconstruction. Long, but I am so confused!
Holy Cow Ronda! It sounds like we have been riding the same wave with the biopsies. It can make you crazy can't it? All the not knowing all the time. Waiting for the other shoe to drop. So far, for me, I have been given the all clear after each one.

I have chosen to wait on the mastectomy until...well I don't know when. If I need another biopsy, then that will probably make it a done deal for me. I will see how things are in 2009. Right now I just want to take a break from thinking about it everyday so I have put it out of my mind for now.

I wish you the best and a very healthy 2009!

PS: Congrats on your awesome weight loss!
