Good luck. Gosh I love giveaways.
Sorry 'bout your diagnosis. I had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma - Stage 3 and went thru chemo, surgery and radiation. I was diagnosed in April of 2007 (1 month after I turned 50). I had RNY on 12/4/08 and have 65 lbs. off so far.
I gained a few lbs. when I underwent chemo. The new chemos are designed so that the patient looses as little weight as possible. It wasn't a significan gain and came off easily. Try to stay positive and do everything they ask of you. They will want you to eat well during and after treatment - proteins/veggies, etc. so you shouldn't have aniy long term weight gain issues.
The advice you received here from others is correct. Stay focused and POSITIVE. Don't let the cancer take over your life! Go to work, meet with friends and do your regular routine.
Prior to my RNY, I had a catscan, Petscan and other diagnostic tests just to be sure there was no lingering problems. I finished radiation in 10/2008 and over 1 year later I am cancer free!
Life is good - I'll be praying for you and if you need to talk or vent, fee free to contact me.
You go girl!!
"A chronic illness is a condition that lasts a year or longer, limits activity, and may require ongoing care. More than 125 million Americans have at least one chronic condition, such as diabetes, cancer, glaucoma, heart disease, Fibromyalga, Multiple Sclerosis, and Lupus. Nearly half as many have more than one chronic condition."
Hello,
This group was specifically created for WLS candidates and post ops who like me face the unique challenges that living with a chronic illness may often present. As individuals with a chronic illness, we face greater challenges that the typical mainstream weight loss surgery patient may not face. Sometimes we feel left out of the loop as we read about others who are doing certain activities that we are no longer able to fully tolerate.
You may find the group by clicking on groups in your index. Once at groups, type in the word Chronic Illness in the search box and the correct group will appear.

I would get a second opinion also.
I had a hysterectomy 12/12 with my TT and my cervix ame back Carcinoma - in-situ and I asked my GYN for a second opinion with a GYN oncologist and they said that Ca in-situ means pre-cancer and it is ok because they took it all out but I still am getting a second opinion and my appt is not until 2/13 I am a nervous wreck so I know what you are going thru this waiting is killing me

I guess given brca it is a risk of reoccurance and the thought being if I became cachetic LOL a band would be reversible. My plan is to have prophylactic mastectomy and reconstruction bilateral after surgery. I don't think I can deal with body image issues until i have lost weight then losing my last piece of feminity the remaining breast would be a much more doable thing. I will have a discussion withmy oncologist next month and go through cardiologist and gastroenterologist EGD. Thanks for the reply. I love this surgeon and it makes me think that perhaps other surgeon who said yes to roux en y wasn't as thorough in reading my medical history

My understanding of WLS is that the differences are based on the person. How risk-averse are you? What's your dieting personality? Do you want something reversible? People have stressed that a person is either appropriate for WLS or not, and the particular type of surgery should be up to the patient. I agree.
Is he expecting cancer to come back for you, or feeling like you may need a reversal to be treated in the future? Anything can happen to anyone in the future--if that's the case, everyone should have something that's reversible because who knows what will happen!
I'd get other opinions ifyou're not comfortable with the band. The band also has the lowest success rate in terms of keeping the weight off in the longer term, something to consider.
