Topic: Hi All
OK, I came to this forum in a round-about way, and just decided to join because almost everything I'm going through has been discussed here.

I've been "mildly obese" for some time, 5'4", 185#.
The doctor I switched to in January (thank goodness) decided to aggressively follow up on my anemia. They found one cancerous polyp in my stomach. After research and consults at OHSU here in Oregon, there is about one treatment for this: sub-total gastrectomy.

My operation was on June 27th, and I've been home for a week after that. For awhile, the only concern I really had was eating enough. I'm pretty sure it's the oxycodone, but I really don't want to eat anything. I'm down to 168#

About a week ago, something hit (tried something new, food poisoning, flu, or something) that brought on dry heaves. Boy, does that do alot for my appetite.

My most recent search was for dry mouth and sore throat. Yeah, my SOs been saying I have been breathing really shallowly.

When I started this post, I was going to mention all of the things I'd looked up here, but I'm getting very sleepy again.

Topic: RE: Do I have Hodgkin's Lymphoma?
I had Hodgkin's a few years ago and actually diagnosed myself online from the symptoms I was having. It took several different doctors to finally get the official diagnosis. I had even named my swollen nodes - Ned & Norris the Naughty Nodes. After chemo and rads, I am happy to say I'm cancer free!

Do you have any other symptoms? Itching? night sweats? pain after alcohol consumption? sternal pain?

Definitely go get checked out. Good luck!

Topic: Do I have Hodgkin's Lymphoma?
I have a hard lump right above my elbow on my inner arm, it's right above the crease, which i have read is the supratrochlear lymph node. It's about the size of a golf ball, and i think i can move it a little, and it hurts really bad. Then on the same arm, my armpit is very swollen, probably twice the size of my other armpit. The whole arm is very sore, and it's scaring me. If this isn't Hodgkin's Lymphoma, then what is it? any ideas?

And yes I know i need to go to the doctor, I'm going in a couple days but I wanted to see if you guys knew anything for right now.

Thanks!

Topic: RE: Lump found Post Breast Augmentation a month later

I agree with your doctor--biopsy is the way to go.  I would make sure it's an excision and not a core needle.  Have them cut the whole thing out, cut it up, and see what it is!

In the future, because of your family history, always ask your doctor to order an ultrasound with your mammograms, and to have them classified as diagnostic vs. screening.  This will insure that they're taking a more thorough look at your breast and any potential abnormalities.

You can check out
www.facingyourrisk.org, a website for people with strong family histories of cancer.

Hang in there, let us know what you learn.

Sorry to hear the news!

I'm not sure about trying to put on weight before surgery, unless your doctors think it's wise.  My ex mother in law had kidney cancer and treatment.  She was very obesity and didn't lose any weight afterward, so I imagine that you may not have to be concerned about that.

I hope everything turns out well for you!

Topic: RE: Need support (kinda long)
Hi there.  I don't have any particular advice, other than to do what you know to do--find a good healthy outlet for the stress you are under, and keep your eye on the goal!

I hope your parents are ok.

I hope you're ok--it sounds like you're going through a whole lot right now.

On another note, cancer centers are often very abrupt.  It's the nature of what they do.  They're specialists, presumably the best in their field, and they've got a 'long line' behind each patient.  They assume that the oncologists or PCPs are giving the patient the information about diagnosis and treatment, and that the cancer center is strictly practicing their expertise in whatever cutting-edge treatments they're offering.

I would recommend writing down any questions or concerns your mom has about her treatment or diagnosis, and speaking to them about it during her check-up time rather than her treatment time if she's doing chemo or radiation.  They are supposed to take time during check-ups to answer your questions.  If not, take the questions to her medical oncologist.  She/he should be able to either answer them right away, or get in touch with the cancer center and get back to her.

I hope this helps.  Hang in there!

Topic: RE: Cancer, Again
Reenie,

I had my right kidney removed due to cancer and 2 years later I had surgery to remove 2 small spots from my liver. I'm currently 1 year without any new cancers and I just met with my bariatric surgeon yesterday and he refuses to to do the procedure unless I have at leat 2 years of cancer free health.

I'm so frustrated becasue he told me that he was almost removed from the podium during a conferance because he brought up the subject of some having the by-pass that had previously had cancer surgery; he said that they were non-suportive of anyone who would even consider doing either the bypass or lapband on anyone that did not have multiple years of cancer free health.

So I decided to find out what I could on-line and imagine my surprise at finding that others had cancer and afterwards had the bypass surgery!

I'm going to continue to read the replies and find out more so I can get back to him , thanks for your posting. Stay healthy. Button

Topic: RE: Anyone with Thyroid Cancer post RNY? (cross post)
 Hi,

First, I am sorry to hear the news that you are dealing with a re-occurence.
I had thyroid cancer last year after a DS in 2001. Not the RNY but will post for your reference anyway. The type of thyroid cancer I had was Papillary. I did the surgery to have the thyroid removed and then the RadioAbelation Therapy (RAI) twice afterwards. In preparation for the radiation, I did the Iodine-free diet for two weeks as suggested on www.thyca.com ( the standard to prep for this treatment that is medically acceptable). I also took two pills the two days before radioabelation called Thyrogen. Thyrogen is fairly new and is supposed to be designed to deplete the body of iodine whether you go on a two week abelation diet prior to the radiation ingestion or not. My docs are on the conservative side and had me do both which I am glad to have done.
The pills are not difficult to swallow so will not create a problem in taking.
The concern that was an unknown for me was about the actual radiation being absorbed. Since I have a DS, and the radiation is in fat soluable pill form, I had to have mine in liquid form to swallow. For you, with the RNY, this willunlikely be an issue as you do not have malabsorption as part of this type of WLS.
It was unclear to the Nuclear Med MD just how much was being absorbed; however, I did have side effects from the radiation so the docs felt there had been absorption. I had scans afterwards, did the abelation another time and with rescan, nothing lit up....six months after last radiation, I now show a possible recurrence that MD is watching and will rescan in Sept. I will have to go through the abelation diet and Throgen tabs again in Sept...
Hope this is of some help in giving you more info from my experience.
Wishing you all the best in your health journey.
Best,
Karen
