Topic: Lap Band & Chemo
I had Lap Band surgery in March 2009 and just had a Lumpectomy and will be starting chemo.  Does anyone know if I need to have the band unfilled?

Topic: RE: What size : new breasts?????
What with the holidays, still waiting to hear about "second" appointment (she said while biting her nails in frustration). My question NOW is - why wasn't I told that it might be easier to do reconstruction BEFORE the radiation treatments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  WHY don't they tell this to EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!   :-(

How did your second consult go?

I am strongly considering/planning to have a prophylactic double mast w/recon after my WLS and losing the weight.  I'd rather do implants than a flap, but hey, a free tummy tuck is a free tummy tuck!

Glad to hear that you're able to get some recon after radiation.  That is my biggest concern.  I hear horror stories of doctors refusing to do recon after radiation.

Topic: RE: Anyone with reconstruction after mammosite radiation?
Thanks for you post! I actually just had, 3 weeks ago, my breast surgery. I had a lift on the non radiated side and implants in both sides. the Dr was concerned about the incisions healing after radiation. He wanted to do as little cutting on the radiated breast as possible. He placed the implant in front of the muscle because he felt my muscle may not be healthy as it should be. Encapsulation of the implant is also a concern. I have to do lots of massaging of the breasts. I have had lots of scar tissue form after subsequent biopsies.

What he explained to me is that massive weight loss patients tend to have a much greater chance of complications with healing, then add the radiation to that, and he was very concerned. As it turns out I have done exceptionally well.

I ended up having the breast surgery and a lower body lift at the same time. Now THAT was tough. The surgery took 7 hours and I am still recuperating, although not very patient! The only tiny issue I have had is my new bellybutton keeps draining and he can't take the stitches out there. All my other stitches were dissolvable and look great. The Dr is VERY relieved that I have such a tiny problem.

Good luck with your decision. It is hard to make I know. I thought about what I would do for the last 3 years.

All the best,
Mary

Topic: RE: About Mammograms following weightloss?

When I was 37, a mammogram missed a 1.5cm solid tumor in my breast that turned out to be cancer.

I don't say that to scare anyone, I say it as an advocate.

NO WOMAN WHO IS PRE-MENOPAUSAL SHOULD RELY ON MAMMOGRAPHY ALONE FOR DETECTION OF CANCER.

Always get it backed up with an ultrasound, or ask your doctor to order an MRI for you.  If you feel a lump, you can have it biopsied.  That is the only way to tell for sure if it's cancerous.

It looks like you're doing well with your weight loss.  Congrats!

I had breast cancer 4 years ago, and am very strongly considering a prophylactic double mast with recon after WLS.  I had a lumpectomy and radiation as well, but not mammosite (I got 'old school dosing').

Is you doctor concerned that you won't heal after mastectomy because of the cutting; or is his concern with the implant???  Especially if you've had biopsies on the radiated breast AFTER radiation, then what's the deal???

I hope you're able to work it out.  Let us know how it goes.

Topic: RE: stomach cancer
Hi there.  I would say that the decision for your surgery should NOT be based on an issue around cancer.

You can have a CT or PET scan of your stomach if there is ever an issue.  The pouch in the RNY is not scope-able, but you can still see it on a scan.

What did you decide?
