Topic: RE: Cancer, Again
I am 1 year out from my battle with Ovarian cancer. I just attended a WLS seminar and have an appt with the surgeon set up for next week. He did not say anything about not being able to have the surgery due to my cancer and I did tell him. Is this an individual surgeon thing or an insurance thing? I need this surgery so bad I hope and pray my bubble isn't burst again (I have been trying to get this surgery for the last 5 years but never had insurance that would cover it until now.
Topic: RE: Big Regret
I too have this regret. I went through chemo last year and felt the same way about my hairloss. My Mom wanted to take a picture of me without my hair but I wouldn't let her. I do have a pic of me wearing my wig but now wish that I had taken the bald photo. Oh well.
Topic: Big Regret
I went through all the "stuff" that one goes through during cancer treatment. Much of it I forgot, and wouldn't have remembered if not for my journal (so glad that I kept one). But as time (2 years) has passed, and I start to reflect on the matter, I have one thing that I really regret. I wished that I had a picture of me without my hair (the bald picture). At the time, the hair loss was so hard to deal with, and something that I tried to hide, and get past. But now, I think back, and it was a time of my greatest life struggle. A "bald" picture would (now) be something to cherish.
If any of you are going through hair loss, please consider "taking it all off" for the camera, and take that picture to document that you made it through such a harrowing journey. I wish I had.

Topic: RYN vs. VSG for long-term cancer patient
In 2003, at age 30, I was diagnosed with Stage IIIc inflammatory breast cancer. In 2006 I had a metastatic recurrance. Since 2003, the inactivity, eating due to nausea, steroids, loss of ovaries/hormones (surgical), and emotional eating has caused me to gain over 100 pounds, making me now 150 pounds overweight.
My brother was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 27. I test negative for gentic markers for both colon and breast cancer.
I would like to have bariatric surgery. My surgeon is recommending RYN over VSG. I ininitally wanted VSG because of the malabsorbtion issues with RYN, concerns about colon cancer, and the potential issues with marginal ulcers, etc.. My hair is already disgustingly thin because of loss of estrogen and having lost it to chemo so many times prior. And I am already osteopenic, at 37 year old, because of the estrogen loss and chemotherapy. But I was concerned about the large blood pressure pill, vitamin B complex (for neuropathy), and calcium pills I must take. The surgeon says that with VSG the pills could "get stuck". I think really the issue is that he hasn't done many, if any VSGs, and because my BMI is so high, he believes RYN is the better choice.
I am still in chemotherapy (targeted), which I will be doing the rest of my life, until they find a cure, or I have another reccurance. I am not immunocompromised with this treatment, but if I did have to go back into a more aggressive chemotherapy, I am wondering if RYN will cause an issue for me? (I also take coumadin, as I had a DVT from my portacathe, and as long as I have a portacathe, I have to conitnue on the coumadin).
Does anyone know anything about the risks of colon cancer in correlation with bariatric surgery? And, what are the thoughts on RYN vs. VSG for someone in a situation such as mine??

Topic: Oral Chemo after GB?
Hi folks - I had my GB in 2005 and physically have been doing very well, though I've been dealing with some regain over the past year or so.
I recently was diagnosed with testicular cancer - just had surgery today to to remove the infected testical and was told that depending on the pathology report might be doing oral chemo.
I'll be asking my oncologist this quesiton as well, but won't be seeing them for a week or two, so I thought I'd ask if any of all y'all know - with the mal-absorption issue of GB, is oral chemo still an option? It sounds like a good alternative to having to go the IV route...
I'm just beginning to do my own research so any info would be helpful!
thanks,
gene

Topic: RE: Pet Scan after WLS
hi
I'm going thru the same thing. I had breast cancer 1 year ago, grade 1, caught very early. I went thru the radiation and took tamoxifen. I have been have this pain in my shoulder for sometime and when I mention to the doctors they thought nothing about it, basicly told me to take a pill. Well, here I am 1 year later, doctor order a bone scan, MRI and a PET Scan. The yellow stuff I had to drink was bad tasting at all. I think they told me it was crystal light. It didn't make me sick at all. Well, it turns out I Do have cancer in the spine, doctor don 't know where it came from. Now I'm waiting to have biopsys done.

Hello well my name Liz, had RNY back in Jan 09. So far so good satisfied with weightloss has been gradual and minimal but still happy with my appearance. Well to get to the point I have been having issues with cysts, fibroids in my woman parts lol. Its true though. I am 33 and have had a total vaginal hysterectomy. It started with an abnormal pap and redid pap had hyperdisplaysia I believe is what I had at the early stages. So I had a leep procedure done and my Gyno wanted to see me every 3 months. Well it went from leep to abnormal pap again to having no period to having pcos. Had a 3 cm cyst, started accumulating fibroids started to have adenomesos (not sure spelled correctly) inflammation of the uterus and my uterus was starting to harden up due to no period. Well ended up switching to another Gyno due to his not wanting to do hystercectomy. Well found another to do hysterectomy and got that taken care of. Well I have a new found health issue and am kind of stunned not knowing who to trust or what to do. Don't know of anyone who's been in this situation so would like some input from anyone who has been. A few weeks ago I got this abcess on my left breast. Never had one especially in that area. Well went to dr put me on antibiotics helped with infection went down and actually healed. It first was the size of a silver dollar and slowly went down to a size of a nickle and is now the size of a dime. My pcp referred me to a breast specialist to have a mamo and ultra sound done just to make sure its an infection in the skin and not in the breast. Well had mamo and ultra sound done and they now found a cyst in my right breast. Radiologist says its a benign cyst and do not need to do anything at this point. I have a follow up with my breast specialist but feel that I may need to do more than just sit back and wait to see if it turns into anything. Now what I'm wondering is should i have it biopsied and go from there or just have her remove it? Im not sure if its I should turn this into a serious situation or if I should just leave it as is?
Liz

Topic: RE: New boobs and body lift??? Is it going to work???
I understand now. I only know of a paternal great aunt who had breast cancer and a double mastectomy so maybe that's why my oncologist didn't suggest it as an option. Thank you for sharing.
I tried to PM you as well, but couldn't. Here's my email: [email protected]
Hope your surgery was uneventful and praying that you have a smooth recovery. You will beat this.
