Topic: RE: Thyroid Cancer
I just had  a thyroidectomy on 11/15/11 due to thyroid cancer. I am waiting for results from my blood work, I am still so very tired.  I also take my synthyroid around 2 or 3 am with an empty stomach I read that its better to take meds in the wee hours of the morning since we have to take so many other vitamins and supplements we dont want them to interact together or they will not work. Can't take calcium and feracon within 4 hours of sinthroid. You should talk to your pharmacist.

Good luck,

Sam

Good luck with your surgery. I hope you don't have BC.

What was the results of your biopsy?  I hope it was neg.  I had RNY in June 2007 and found breast cancer Jan 2011.

Has your surgery been scheduled yet? How long ago did you have BC?

I had my surgery on Nov 8th and have already lost 20 pounds. My husband and I both had WLS, same day, same doc. I must say we were the talk of the hospital unit. Everyone found it awesome that we did it together. I ended up in the hospital longer than my husband as my hemoglobin was low when I was admitted and dropped even more during surgery. I ended up having three blood transfusions and trouble getting one of the incisions to quite bleeding. They finally removed the stri-strips and put stitches in. I'm feeling more like a human being with every new day and getting around better too. My knees and ankles were always swollen because of my arthritis and the swelling has gone away. Makes walking alot less painful. It's been interesting to see what change comes with every new day.

Take care, DeeDee

That question was just asked at the class I went to.,  We were told the old stomach is left in you and your surgery is completley reversable because of thei.  It is off to the side still receiving a blood supply.  Just not doing anything

Dee Dee it sounds like you have had a lot of surgery.  I hope your WLS went well.  I also am a BC survivor .  I feel like I am getting my 3rd shot at life by haveing this WLS

Not sure about the radiation from the CT's.  I'd say you would be okay, and I would be better safe then sorry.  I hope it all turns out okay for you!

Topic: RE: HPV?

I've got it too...I had to have a LEEP a few years ago.  It is a virus and is contracted through sex.  Unless you and your partner were both virgins there is an extremely high chance of getting it.  That is why there is such a big debate about it now for having children vacinated against it at an early age.

I had CIN III (pre-cancer cells - Severe Dysplasia) and had to have the Leep procedure.  It was not pleasant, so if you have to have it done ask to be knocked out!!

It can turn into cervical cancer if not treated.  If you have not had children yet, you will want to discuss the procedures.  I already knew I was not able to have children and had already adopted, so I wasn't too upset that it can affect your chances of becoming pregnant.

I go next week for my Pap and am keeping my fingers crossed for another "normal" result.  I am a little worried this year as I have developed Alpoceia Areata (round bald spot on my head) that came out of nowhere....I'm hoping I don't have cancer cells and this is my bodies way of fighting....

Do a search on CIN (Dysplasia) and HPV....you will find a lot of information...I hope I helped a little bit....

Topic: RE: Cancer in colon, liver and lungs...5 years post op
I had VSG in Dec 2010, lost 127 lbs in 10 months. Within a month of my VSG, I had a tachycardia and subsequent successful ablation, today I got the results of a partial mastectomy done one week ago today, early stages of invasive breast cancer.

My choices, bilat mastectomy and skin conservation reconstruction or stay with the partial mastectomy and reconstruction to make breasts symetrical only done one week ago, and do radiation therapy and doctor warned me that an oncologist will be in my future.

I'm leaning towards the bilat mastectomy and no radiation therapy. Statistics show a little better going this route. Surgeon seems to be leaning towards radiation therapy, possibly chemo pending results of pathology reports that are not in yet. I know too many women with leukemia post radiation which is a known risk.

Back to your question, YES, I believe the drastic drop in weight in such a short period dumped a lot of estrogen into my system. I'm post menopausal and it caused me to have one heavy period after VSG surgery, but I also believe that my cancer is most likely an estrogen receptor (won't know for sure until pathology is back).

Yes, I probably would of found it in a year or so down the road, but the amount of estrogen my body had to deal with fast tracked the cancer. (It also uncovered a tachycardia that had gone undiagnosed previously.)

I don't regret for a minute having VSG, only wish I could of done it 15-20 years ago and avoided the collateral damage. I'm 54 years old, and it would of been much kinder to my body to have done it at age 34 years old.

For months I've been exhausted and the bariatric surgeon has been on me to exercise more, etc. A short 3 years ago I was running 5K a day and one day I just didn't have the energy, depression set in, gained weight, hit menopause, went on hormone replacement therapy (big mistake), gained more weight, had VSG, then tachycardia, now invasive breast cancer.

VSG is a double edged culprit. I've had lots of other problems show up since, but with the weight loss it was easier to diagnose and recover from surgeries. I try to view the VSG as possibly making my breast cancer diagnosis an early diagnosis vs. late stage and subsequently (by accident) saving years of my life.
