I know for us breast cancer women there is a wonderful board that helps us with questions and just "being there" for each other. Have you found one for kidney cancer? It will probably really help you.

Thank you. I'm starting to deal with it better now that I have had my surgery. I know that I will not have any chemo or radiation with this. They do not do that with Kidney cancer. I will have follow up CT scans how often I don't know yet. I go to see my doctor in three weeks to discuss my treatment plan. I'm just praying that no cells were left behind and that surgery removed it all. It has been a very stressful four months since they found the mass to the biopsy and then the results being cancer and the finally surgery. I do feel a big relief since having it removed now I'm finally starting to feel better I'm 10 days post op and ready to start being healthy and exercise and take care of myself again. Thank you again for your response.Take care and hope you are doing well also.

Do you ever wonder deep down if WLS was the culprit?

I had an RNY on 9/11/2009 and have lost 136 #'s.   I just learned Friday, after a routine colonoscopy, that I have Colon Cancer.  I have never regretted my decision to have the RNY.  I lost 136 lbs and feel better, younger and healthier than I did 20 years ago.  I'm 69 and will be 70 in about 2 weeks. I was pretty miserable prior to the WLS but have never felt better.  I feel that I am more able to fight the battle against the big C BECAUSE I had the surgery. Obesity, not the surgery was probably the main culprit attributible to the cancer. I've always had a positive attitude when faced with any challenge and see no reason to change now.  I had PET and CT scans on Monday and results of those as well as byopsy's show absolutely no evidence that this cancer has spread.  I see the surgeon on Friday for the surgery schedule. Please keep me in your kind thoughts.

Not trying to sound rude, but I do know what it is. I just never imagined I would be going through this. I had plans to have plastic surgery this year to get rid of excess skin and tummy tuck and other procedures this RCC just took me by surprise. My surgery is done I'm healing slowly but at least it was caught early and I have no Mets. As soon as I'm all the way healed I can start getting my life back on track which means eating right and exercise.

You may want to look into DIEP. That's what I had done and I am THRILLED with the results. I had it done at the time of the original surgery but it can be done even afterwards. You need to find a very skilled plastic surgeon to do this surgery. There are not a lot around. Mine was very well known for outstanding DIEP results at the Mayo here in Phoenix.
I was originally offered a lumpectomy. It was me who (based off family history) asked for a double mastectomy. I had no idea at the time that there was a surgery called DIEP until my oncologist from the Mayo told me about it.
It's one hell of a surgery but it will give you new breasts and a tummy tuck. Insurance paid for it all. They don't balk at things breast cancer related, I have crappy insurance and it was covered for me.
My breasts look so natural (for actually being my tummy fat and not real breast tissue) that even my OB/GYN doctor commented about them at my yearly check up. She isn't from the Mayo, had only heard about the surgery but never had a patient who had it done. She looked at my breast in this perplexed stare and said, "If I didnt know any better, I would think you had a breast reduction because of how your scars look, that does NOT look like someone who's had a double mastectomy"

I started with Venofer infusions every 14 days, then monthly.  I still get it every 6 weeks as needed.  It's painless.  The dose you a bit slower in the beginning if you have lymphadema and then you can get the whole dose in 30mins.  You can always get Procrit injections but if you have lymphadema they are sometimes hesitant to use it because you can form a clot. Make sure you wear your helmet!  I love cycling - I feel free and like I have never been sick :-)
